Job Summary An instructional assistant in a Kentucky juvenile detention center helps students with their academic work, manages the classroom, and assists teachers. They work under the supervision of certified teachers, supporting the educational needs of incarcerated youth.
Essential functions, Duties and Responsibilities:
Assisting with Instruction:
Instructional assistants help students with their coursework, provide individualized support, and reinforce learning concepts. Classroom Management:
They help maintain a safe and orderly learning environment, assisting with classroom routines and behavior management. Administrative Support:
They may assist with record-keeping, materials preparation, and other administrative tasks related to the classroom. Building Relationships:
Instructional assistants often build positive relationships with students, offering support and encouragement. Communication:
They communicate with teachers and other staff about student progress and needs. Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Passing score on the KY Para-educator Assessment or Associate's degree High school diploma or G.E.D., preferred Experience preferred Understanding of child development, behavior management, and special education is beneficial Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and the ability to build rapport with at-risk youth are important. WORKING CONDITIONS
Juvenile detention centers are secure facilities, so staff must be prepared to work in a structured and controlled environment. Instructional assistants may work with students on a one-on-one basis or in small groups. The work can be challenging but also rewarding, as it offers an opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of young people. DAYS WORKED AND SALARY
186-day contract + 33 4-hour days in June/July, possible Classified salary schedule approved by the Newport Board of Education
