The Project Engineer II is responsible for leading design efforts, overseeing the preparation of technical drawings and calculations, and mentoring junior staff. This role involves managing complex design tasks and ensuring the successful delivery of engineering solutions. The Project Engineer II works closely with senior engineers and project managers to ensure that designs meet both client expectations and regulatory requirements.

Primary Essential Functions

Lead the development of detailed engineering designs for complex projects, ensuring that designs meet technical, regulatory, and client requirements. Prepare and review technical drawings, models, calculations, and specifications, ensuring accuracy and adherence to project goals and standards. Use advanced design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks) to develop detailed models and construction documents that integrate structural, mechanical, and environmental systems. Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers, helping them develop their technical skills and knowledge. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, engineers, and contractors, to ensure the seamless integration of building systems and the successful execution of designs. Conduct quality control reviews of project deliverables, ensuring that all designs meet internal and external standards for accuracy and technical precision. Serve as a key technical resource for project teams, providing leadership in resolving design challenges and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. Participate in client meetings and presentations, effectively communicating design concepts and updates to ensure client satisfaction.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities)

Knowledge

In-depth knowledge of engineering principles, building systems, and construction methods. Familiarity with local, state, and federal building codes, zoning regulations, and sustainability standards. Strong understanding of project documentation processes and construction administration. Awareness of industry trends and advancements in engineering technology and materials. Proficiency in engineering software, including CAD, BIM, and simulation tools.

Skills

Advanced technical drafting and detailing skills for preparing precise engineering documents. Strong leadership and mentoring skills for guiding junior engineers. Excellent communication skills for client presentations and internal team collaboration. Time management and project management skills for balancing multiple responsibilities. Problem-solving skills for addressing technical challenges and ensuring design quality.

Abilities

Ability to manage complex design tasks and oversee the technical aspects of projects. Ability to provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff. Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to clients and non-technical stakeholders. Ability to manage project timelines and ensure that design deliverables meet project milestones. Ability to ensure that designs comply with building codes and regulatory standards.

Qualifications

Required

Bachelors degree in engineering from ABET-accredited university. 5 - 10 years of experience in engineering design and project management.

Preferred

Experience leading complex or large-scale engineering projects. Licensed Professional Engineer, EIT certification or ability to obtain licensure in near term.

Physical Requirements

Ability to remain seated for extended periods while working at a computer or attending meetings. Frequent use of standard office equipment, including computers, keyboards, telephones, and printers. Occasional light physical activity such as walking, standing, or carrying materials (up to 25 lbs.). Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person, over the phone, and through written communication.
