Job Description Summary
The
Virtual Infrastructure Engineer
supports the academic and administrative missions of the university by designing, implementing, and maintaining a secure, reliable and scalable virtual server environment. This position is responsible for the full lifecycle management of virtual machines using VMware vSphere, supporting both Windows and Linux server environments. The engineer ensures system availability and performance, maintains accurate infrastructure documentation, and oversees virtual storage operations leveraging NetApp storage solutions. Responsibilities also include monitoring alerts, responding to incidents, and collaborating with network and cybersecurity personnel to maintain a secure and scalable environment. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and a commitment to service excellence in a dynamic higher education setting. Essential Functions Manage Virtual Infrastructure: Administer and maintain VMware vSphere environments, including vCenter and ESXi hosts. Provision, modify, and decommission virtual machines as needed across academic and administrative systems. Support Project Work

Participate in the planning and implementation of infrastructure-related projects, including upgrades, migrations, and new system rollouts. Provide technical input and documentation for project deliverables. Collaborate with Network and Security Personnel:
Work closely with network and security staff to ensure infrastructure compliance with institutional security standards and policies. Participate in audits and remediation efforts as needed. Monitor and Respond to Alerts:
Actively monitor system alerts and performance metrics via vSphere and other monitoring tools. Investigate and resolve infrastructure-related incidents in a timely manner. Support and maintain both Windows and Linux virtual server environments. Ensure system patches and updates are applied regularly and consistently. Administer Virtual Storage Systems:
Manage and optimize virtual storage resources, including NetApp storage systems. Monitor storage performance and capacity while planning for future growth. Maintain Documentation and Inventory:
Keep server and infrastructure documentation current, including network diagrams, inventory spreadsheets, and configuration records. Optimize System Performance:
Analyze and tune the virtual environment for efficiency, reliability, and scalability. Recommend and implement improvements based on usage patterns and performance data. Respond to Service Requests and Tickets

Monitor the IT ticketing system and respond to assigned requests and incidents. Provide high-quality support to faculty, staff, and other stakeholders. Contribute to Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery:
Assist in maintaining and testing disaster recovery and business continuity plans for virtual systems and storage infrastructure. Required Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills
Bachelors degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field. 3-5 years of hands-on experience managing virtual infrastructure in a medium to large-scale enterprise or higher education environment. Proven experience administering VMware vSphere, vCenter, and ESXi hosts. Experience managing Windows Server and Linux-based systems in a virtualized environment. Experience working with NetApp storage systems (or similar vendors), including provisioning, performance monitoring, and capacity planning. Familiarity with IT service management tools and responding to tickets/incidents. Active Directory/Group Policy Monitoring tools (e.g., Pandora FMS , Cylance, Darktrace, etc.) Backup and replication tools (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, or similar). Basic knowledge of networking concepts (VLANs, firewalls, subnets, DNS ). Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects independently. Solid understanding of virtualization best practices and performance optimization. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong attention to detail and documentation. Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional IT teams and end users. Awareness of security principles and how they apply to virtual environments. Preferred Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills
