The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) General Counsel Unit in the State Services section is looking for an attorney to join their team. Colorado is recognized as a national leader in pioneering renewable energy technology, and the PUC is at the forefront of these efforts. The General Counsel Unit offers the opportunity to practice in a challenging and cutting-edge area of the law, dealing with complex issues related to renewable energy, solar, wind, battery storage, and electric vehicles. The Unit supports and implements the state's goal of achieving 100% clean energy, including clean natural gas and hydrogen facilities. It also advises on water, transportation, telecommunications, rail and transit safety, and gas pipeline safety matters. This is a hybrid role involving serving as General Counsel to the PUC and handling some litigation. WHAT YOU WILL DO The State Services Section seeks an attorney to join the PUC team. The Unit counsels Commissioners on complex legal issues in transportation, rail safety, telecommunications, gas, electric, water utilities, and renewable energy matters. Responsibilities include reviewing testimony, conducting cross-examinations, analyzing pleadings, drafting rules and orders, and handling litigation before courts and federal agencies. The attorney will also conduct legal research and provide advice on a variety of issues, interacting with Commissioners, engineers, economists, and outside attorneys. This recruitment may fill multiple Assistant Attorney General positions in the section. Salary is based on experience and qualifications, with a range for AAG I ($88,197-$117,964) and AAG II ($102,099-$136,558), effective July 1, 2025. Salaries are paid biweekly. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Applicants must: Be admitted to or eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar and be in good standing. Preferred candidates will have experience in utilities law, energy law, or administrative law, strong legal research and writing skills, the ability to work independently or in teams, and a desire to learn and be mentored. A minimum of one writing sample is required. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Pass a background check. Participate in E-Verify.
