THE CITY ATTORNEY'S OFFICE The City Attorney's Office is responsible for all legal representation and advice for the City Council, Boards, Commissions, and all City officers and staff in all matters of law pertaining to the City, as well as all City code prosecution and litigation services. The office is staffed by six attorneys (the City Attorney and five assistants), one investigator, one office administrator, and five clerical staff, functioning as a close team. Many assignments cross over into several departments (e.g., Public Works, Community Development, Human Resources, Parks and Recreation, Airport, Waterfront, Police, and Fire). The City Attorney’s Office also works closely with City Departments, including the Santa Barbara Police Department, Santa Barbara Fire Department, and Community Development Department, to enforce municipal code violations. Attorneys collaborate on complex matters. THE POSITION The Deputy City Attorney is an entry-level position in the City Attorney's Office, designed for quick advancement into higher roles with greater responsibilities. This role involves both advisory work to the City’s departments and prosecutorial duties. Under supervision of an experienced Assistant City Prosecutor, key responsibilities include reviewing cases from law enforcement agencies for filing decisions, making filing determinations, initiating criminal and civil complaints, assessing case value for charge reductions, pleas, and sentences; appearing in court; negotiating case dispositions; case presentation; conducting site visits; reviewing digital evidence; handling discovery, law and motion matters; court appearances; jury and bench trials; witness preparation; pre-trial motions; evidentiary objections; post-trial motions; sentencing recommendations; managing nuisance cases such as substandard housing, illegal short-term rentals, and animal control; handling receivership and civil litigation cases; appeals; drafting warrants; working on cannabis issues; and managing administrative citations and appeals. The role also involves handling Gun Violence and Workplace Violence Restraining Order cases and related civil litigation. Additional duties include providing legal advice on municipal law topics such as land use, Brown Act, Public Records Act, drafting ordinances and contracts, and representing the City before various boards and commissions. Strong legal research and writing skills are essential. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The candidate must be a member of the California State Bar in good standing, possess strong organizational skills, and maintain a positive, courteous attitude. Experience in criminal and/or municipal law is desirable. Excellent public speaking, writing, and legal research skills are required. The candidate should enjoy working in a collaborative, flexible environment with frequent contact across diverse City departments and agencies. Experience with legal case management and document automation software is a plus. COMPENSATION The salary range for the Deputy City Attorney is $101,506.60 - $123,381.70 annually.
