Industrial mechanic job description

Full Time Employment commensurate per experience

An industrial mechanic, also known as an industrial machinery mechanic or maintenance machinist, is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing machinery and equipment in industrial settings like factories and production facilities. They ensure the smooth operation of production and processing machinery, minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity.

Key responsibilities

Performing preventive and corrective maintenance: Conducting routine inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and adjustments to prevent breakdowns and extend the lifespan of machinery.

Troubleshooting and diagnosis: Identifying the root cause of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, plc systems, and electrical problems in industrial equipment.

Repairing and replacing components: Dismantling and reassembling machinery, repairing or replacing worn or defective parts like gears, bearings, belts, and seals.

Installation and assembly: Installing new machinery, ensuring proper alignment, calibration, and operational efficiency.

Reading blueprints and technical manuals: Interpreting schematics, diagrams, and operating manuals to understand equipment and controls for maintenance, repair, and installation tasks.

Welding and fabrication: Using welding, (stainless steel/mig) grinding, and cutting techniques to repair or fabricate replacement parts when needed.

Safety and compliance: Adhering to safety regulations and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment and compliance with standards like OSHA.

Documentation and reporting: Maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities, parts used, and repairs made, and preparing reports for management.

Collaboration: Working effectively with engineers, production managers, and other teams to align maintenance activities with production goals and improve system performance.

Essential skills

Mechanical skills: Strong understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems.

Troubleshooting and problem-solving: Ability to diagnose and resolve complex mechanical and electrical issues efficiently.

Technical proficiency: Experience with diagnostic tools, computer software, and the ability to interpret technical documentation.

Manual dexterity and physical stamina: Capacity to work with tools, lift heavy parts, and work in various positions and environments.

Attention to detail: Ability to detect minor issues, perform precise adjustments, and ensure accurate work.

Communication: Effective verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with colleagues and report findings.

Safety awareness: Thorough knowledge of safety protocols and practices in an industrial setting.

Qualifications

Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent.

May benefit from a certificate or associate's degree in industrial maintenance or a related field.

Experience in industrial maintenance or heavy equipment is generally required, often a minimum of 1-3 years.

Completion of an apprenticeship program is common for millwrights and beneficial for industrial mechanics.
