The H&R market sector includes clients that own and operate highways, toll roads, city, town and local roads, and bridge structures that carry the same roadways. HDR provides bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning and tolling services.
Primary Responsibilities The responsibilities of the Highway & Roads Market Sector Director are divided into three areas:
Market leadership and business development (approximately 70%)
Staff development (20%)
Support to Operations (10%)
Market Sector Directors set HDR’s strategy for the market sector, expand services to clients, and work with region and area leadership to implement growth initiatives and develop staff to achieve market sector goals. They coordinate with Transportation Business Group leadership and practice areas to implement strategic growth plans.
Key Focus Areas
Oversee the creation and implementation of strategic vision and direction for the market sector, aligning technical and professional services with business and operations leadership.
Serve as Client Manager for selected key clients; engage in projects as Principal-In-Charge.
Promote HDR services to clients in the market sector; collaborate with client managers on business development.
Participate as a member of the Transportation Business Group Management Team; work with Regional Business Group Directors on area goals and market sector initiatives.
Lead client development and pursuit processes using proven capture techniques; support strategic pursuits through client relationships and pursuit activities.
Represent HDR in industry organizations and develop strategic partnerships; lead HDR’s presence with industry groups in US, Canada, EMEA and APAC regions.
Staff Development
Lead an organization that supports client needs and staff growth; assist area leadership with recruitment of future market sector employees.
Manage Global Market Sector P&L in coordination with local area managers; drive technical excellence and coordinate staffing; approve key hires; participate in annual performance conversations.
Operations Support
Assist Regional Business Group Directors and area managers in delivering professional services; drive client management and monitor market sector profitability; review staff assignments and promote work sharing.
Monitor performance indicators (profit, unbilled revenue, AR, etc.); ensure effective use of resources; assist in contract reviews; promote QA/QC; disseminate lessons learned.
Qualifications Preferred Qualifications
Minimum 20 years of experience in planning/engineering in highway design or bridge design
Professional engineering license or equivalent
Current or past leadership positions within highway/road industry associations (AASHTO, IBTTA, etc.)
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or closely related field
Minimum of 12 years industry experience including leadership
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong client management, client development and a history of growing/leading a practice
Strong business skills; budgeting, staffing and operations
Strong ability to analyze the marketplace and position HDR strategically
