Fire and Rescue Dispatch

This is specialized communications work in receiving and dispatching accurate information to appropriate emergency personnel (Police, Fire, Medical), on an assigned shift. Work involves responsibility for the operation of a specialized radio, utilizing multiple channels and frequencies, and receiving varied calls for police, fire, and emergency medical services by radio, telephone, or computer, in a communications center. Position requires fast, efficient, and accurate receiving, dispatching, and processing of calls and messages to appropriate vehicles and personnel. Employees work under general supervision with considerable independence, subject to special instructions or orders to meet special operating circumstances or emergencies. Responsibilities include: Receiving and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls and complaints from the public concerning crimes, fires, and medical emergencies; questions the caller to determine the nature of the problem; enters information into a CAD System, verifying the location and determining the appropriate responder; maintains verbal contact with the caller for the purpose of updating in-progress calls and continually updates responding units. Dispatching personnel and appropriate equipment to the scene of an emergency, while maintaining radio contact, giving location and description of the situation. Dispatching city service vehicles and other equipment as required Maintaining contact with units on assignments, maintaining status and location of all units. Enters, updates, and retrieves information from computer systems Monitors multiple radio frequencies simultaneously Maintains physical and electronic files of stolen cars, guns, and articles; obtains and disseminates additional information on these items Maintains outstanding warrant files Maintains computer files of police and fire related records Operates as a liaison between agencies Relays administration messages May provide on the job training for new or existing employees Performs related work as required Qualifications include: Minimum Education, Training, Experience: High School diploma or GED certificate. Some experience in operating communications equipment and basic computers. Physical Requirements: Work is essentially sedentary with occasional walking, bending, and lifting objects less than 25 pounds. Work requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time, and requires continuous, repetitive hand/arm movement. Other Requirements: Must possess a valid Alabama driver's license Must complete a pre-employment background screen Must pass a pre-employment drug screen Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of the geography of the city, location of streets and important buildings. Good diction and clear voice Requires regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others and work as a team Proficient skill in the operation of telephone and radio equipment Proficient skill in operating a keyboard Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions Ability to learn the proper use of a multi-functional dispatch console with an integrated assortment of communications equipment, including a digital playback unit, multi-functional radio/telephone system and the computer aided dispatch system (CAD).
