Information Technology Position
Job Overview Performs technical server and network administration tasks to implement, maintain and improve the functionality of the Town's computer systems and specialized business-critical software. An employee in this class manages servers and assures various databases and business-critical software runs correctly, working closely with staff in Town departments to analyze software and hardware problems, install upgrades, troubleshoot issues, maintain systems, and train users. Duties include performing Level III troubleshooting and problem solving and performing sever and network maintenance tasks, testing and documenting new products and applications while maintaining existing technologies and working with users in implementing new programs in their work areas; troubleshooting and resolving issues with hardware and specialized departmental software, performing business analyst responsibilities with business-critical software; researching and developing recommendations for improving business practices; monitoring systems for viruses, running diagnostics, and configuring and defragmentation of systems. The employee also shares in larger computer system installation projects and in general help desk responsibilities, working remotely or on site to resolve after-hours issues. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of the Assistant IT Director and is evaluated based on results obtained. Essential Duties and Tasks Serves as systems administrator, managing virtual servers and storages devices. Serves as SQL database administrator, backing up and restoring databases, monitoring maintenance schedules, and installing upgrades to platforms as needed. Works with specialized business software including tasks such as planning, installation, configuration, testing, implementation, and management of systems environment in support of Town's business needs; troubleshoots system errors and takes corrective action in a manner which will have minimum impact on the user community. Fully manage the town's ERP and other database driven systems. Manages Windows upgrades. Creates and maintains databases and specialized reports for accessing data stored on various platforms throughout the network., producing ad-hoc reports on request; performs data extracts which includes data mapping and conversion when transferring data between hardware/software platforms. Performs business and systems analyst duties testing and documenting new products and applications while maintaining existing technologies and working with users in implementing new programs in their work areas. Performs network configuration planning, cabling, and termination; assists with installation of switches and routers, configuration of networks. Run diagnostics programs to resolve problems; walks customer through problem-solving process; responds to queries, resolving quick issues and escalating more in-depth issues to proper technical group. Assists major systems projects involving the design, testing and implementation of computer applications to enhance work performed by the Town departments; determines scope and timeline for projects and provides the necessary technical documents for review and acceptance throughout the life cycle of projects. Supports specialized system software and acts as a liaison between software vender and user departments. Supports and trains users on new and existing computer systems. Advises the department director and other departments on technology choices for current and future needs; researches and stays current on software and hardware systems. Performs related tasks as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of the appropriate computer programming languages necessary for the position. Thorough knowledge of the modern techniques in system analysis and design. Thorough knowledge of the operations uses and capabilities of the Town's computer equipment. Skilled in investigating, analyzing, and resolving information system problems with hardware, software, and peripheral components and/or operator issues. Ability to design, develop, implement, and maintain database applications and systems, and to manage several projects simultaneously. Ability to interview users, diagnose complex problems independently and translate and documents needs into a comprehensive system application solution. Ability to manage projects; interpret documentation and manuals; document database models and data structures. Customer service focus and ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with Town staff, vendors, and other persons contacted while performing assigned duties. Ability to research current technological offerings in the market and analyze against user requirements. Ability to provide coaching and technical training to Town staff. Willingness to keep current and actively seek new information and technology in the operation and processing of computer systems. Requirements Desirable Education and Experience Associate's degree in computer science, information systems, or related field; at least 3 years experience in technical support and administration; or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Special Requirements NC Driver's License network administration certificates preferred.
