IT System Administrator Journey
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is a multimodal agency with a global reputation for excellence. WSDOT is seeking a skilled and motivated systems administration and cybersecurity professional to join our team in the Olympic & Southwest Regions. This position has limited telework options and reports in-person to the Vancouver, WA regional office. As a regional technician and cybersecurity specialist, you will be at the forefront of protecting WSDOT's critical systems and infrastructure. In this journey-level position, you will apply advanced technical expertise across a broad spectrum of cybersecurity and systems administration disciplines. You'll lead the charge in assessing and mitigating risks, implementing effective security controls, and ensuring secure, reliable access to essential IT services. Your work will directly support 24/7 operations critical to regional transportation systems, partner agencies, and public-facing services. As the IT System Administrator Journey, you will collaborate with project managers, technicians, and operational teams to design, implement, and manage security and system solutions across cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments. Your guidance will be instrumental in developing standards, conducting security assessments, and maintaining resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding evolving cyber threats. The Olympic-Southwest Technology Services (OSW TS) team provides consultation, analysis, planning, design, development, testing, configuration, implementation, operation, administration, maintenance, troubleshooting and asset management of multi-regional servers, virtual environments, network infrastructure, telecommunications systems, software, reproduction, operating systems, workstations and mobile devices. OSW TS provides these services to over 1400 employees and 2382 IT end devices remotely and at 54 sites within 13 counties for two distinct business regions, Olympic and Southwest, enabling WSDOT employees to complete their assigned work activities in support of the agency's mission. Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the IT System Administrator Journey will: Design, implement, maintain, troubleshoot and update virtual and cloud infrastructure. Plan, implement and lead deployment projects of new virtual infrastructure and provide expert consultation to all IT staff to ensure success of projects, positive customer experience, and educational/training opportunities to staff. Support all software, hardware, and networking aspects of Active Directory (AD), Cloud services, servers, applications, database management systems, replication, archiving and security. Independently monitor Application, Database & Operating System event logs as well as server performance and network infrastructure to analyze trends and identify issues. Develop plans and remediate incidents based on security audits and/or evaluations for the OSW Regions. Provide project management of tasks related to cybersecurity, to ensure timely mitigation and remediation of risk, and maintain standards and policy compliance. Conduct technical research and testing of operating systems, applications, database management systems, storage, backups and replication systems. Determine viability of increased levels of virtualization and ensure disaster recovery reclamation in support of Agency virtualization and business continuity missions. To be considered for this opportunity, at least one (1) of the following are required: Eight (8) years of IT experience working in a customer serviced-focused technology organization. OR An associate's degree in computer science or closely related field and six (6) years of experience working in Information Technology. OR A bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science or Management Information Systems or Software Development, or related field and four (4) years of experience working in Information Technology. In addition to one (1) of the above, the following are also required: Two (2) years of experience that demonstrates system administration troubleshooting skills and problem solving with an ability to make independent decisions and judgements about workflows and work priorities. Experience providing technical consulting and performing installation of IT hardware and software. Effective communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate professionally with a diverse set of peers and vendors in written and verbal form. Skills and the ability comprehend the security implications of vulnerabilities and apply mitigation strategies. Skills to provide technical guidance and advice to peer IT staff. A valid driver's license. Knowledge of: Advanced diagnostic tools: HP Systems Insight Manager, Solar Winds Engineers Toolset, SQL Admin Studio and Fluke Optiview Active Directory Users & Computers, Exchange Management Console and PowerShell Server, PC, peripherals, hardware, software, architecture, and operational theory Microsoft Operating systems, applications, management and technical tools Imaging, group policies, and task sequence Networked computing environment and infrastructure It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: One (1) year of experience in cybersecurity within at least two (2) the following cybersecurity technologies: Vulnerability management Intrusion detection and prevention Application security Network security Incident response and handling Anti-virus/malware management Security assessments
