Election Support Specialist
Under direct supervision, provides support in the execution of election-related activities. Performs administrative support for voter registrations or absentee ballots processing, assists in organizing voter polling sites, delivers/picks up voting supplies, equipment, and machines to polling sites, cleans and makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment. Illustrative Examples of Work
Performs clerical work such as filing, sorting, and mailings; assists the general public over the phone and/or in person. Enters, revises, stores, and prints correspondence, reports, contracts, and other information requiring a high degree of accuracy, using word processing, and spreadsheet software applications and other office equipment; performs quality control of data entry on ballots, voter registration, and related documents. Reports voter registration and absentee ballot processing results to appropriate staff at prescribed intervals. May drive a van to deliver/pick up equipment and supplies to/from polling sites throughout Polk County; loads/unloads truck manually and by operating a forklift; sorts ballots for proper precincts. Performs set up and tear down of voting machines and equipment at voting sites; cleans equipment and polling sites; performs testing on voting equipment at polling places; may make minor adjustments and repairs to equipment. Assists in the recruitment, assignment, and scheduling of election poll workers and precinct chairpersons; ensures workers are properly trained and assists in conducting training workshops; prepares and coordinates written instructions, references, and training materials; provides on-going assistance and instruction to workers. Performs related duties as required. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of and ability to maintain departmental policies, procedures, and standards. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing elections, voter registration, absentee balloting, ballots, and recordkeeping. Skill in organizational abilities and multitask management. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other relevant software applications. Excellent proofreading skills. Ability to file alphabetically and numerically and maintain office records. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including composing letters and memos. Ability to consistently demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and tact in personal interactions and function effectively in stressful situations. Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with other County employees, election workers, public officials, and the general public. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds. Training and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent education, and Two years' experience in general elections, voter registration, and/or absentee balloting, or Any equivalent combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) are preferred. Special Requirements
A criminal background check is required. A drug screen is required prior to final offer of employment. A valid State of Iowa driver's license is required. Certification in the operation of forklifts is required within six months of employment.
