HDR seeks a Highway & Roads Market Sector Director to lead the Highway & Roads (H&R) market sector, HDR's largest market sector representing nearly $1B in annual revenue. Market Sector Directors (MSD) are part of HDR's matrix management structure that drive our business and guide growth and client service across the market sector.
Responsibilities
Market leadership and business development (approximately 70%)
Staff development (20%)
Support to Operations (10%)
The Highway & Roads Market Sector Director is responsible to support area business development and client management while defining and implementing key growth initiatives, coordinating best practices and ensuring delivery of high-quality professional services, while reinforcing HDR's brand in the marketplace. The role works with region and area leadership to implement growth plans and operating plans at the market sector level, and with client managers, practice group leaders and other leadership to achieve annual market sector goals.
In the US, HDR maintains contracts with nearly every state department of transportation and many towns and counties; HDR is expanding internationally. Our H&R professionals engage with clients to provide expertise in bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning and tolling, construction management and administration, and to bring HDR services including advisory, environmental, strategic communications, facilities and more.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee the creation and implementation of the market sector's strategic vision and direction—coordinating the visions of the technical and professional services with the business group and operations leadership across the firm.
Serve as the Client Manager for selected key clients within the market sector.
Engage in selected projects as Principal-In-Charge.
Promote the marketing and delivery of HDR services to clients within the market sector, working with client managers.
Participate as a member of the Transportation Business Group Management Team.
Work with Regional Business Group Directors on the development and delivery of area goals and market sector initiatives.
Work with client managers and business development leaders to drive client development and pursuit processes based on proven capture techniques.
Support selected area and strategic pursuits through client relationship development and pursuit activities.
Participate in industry associations at a leadership level and serve as a role model in business and community organizations.
Identify key investments (acquisitions and technology) to maintain or drive HDR into industry leadership.
Monitor marketing capabilities and ensure the market sector collaborates with departments to achieve goals.
Develop relationships with industry counterparts in other consulting organizations.
Develop and maintain relationships with senior leadership in key client organizations.
Lead relationships with other firms in the industry that share HDR’s culture, providing reciprocal synergy based on technical expertise, client relationships and geographic presence. These partnerships may lead to acquisition consideration as part of HDR’s growth strategy.
Lead HDR’s presence and representation with industry organizations in the US, Canada, EMEA and APAC regions (e.g., AASHTO, IBTTA, NASTO, WASHTO, MASTO, SASHTO, and others).
Staff Development
Assume responsibility for Global Market Sector P&L in coordination with local area managers and coordinate support of work-sharing among departments.
Work with business class directors to drive technical excellence and coordinate technical staff to support project delivery and marketing efforts.
Coordinate staffing and recruiting plans for key hires and assist local leadership with hiring.
Approve all key/strategic hires in the market sector.
Participate in Annual Performance Conversations for key market sector leaders.
Support to Operations
Monitor market sector performance indicators and manage market sector profit and loss; monitor staff workload and facilitate work sharing; promote effective use of company resources and apply staff expertise to area projects.
Assist with contract review on key projects to ensure risk management, proper staffing, quality reviews and resolution of claims.
Promote Quality Assurance/Quality Control; work with leadership to support marketing and project activities.
Facilitate development and dissemination of lessons learned.
Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum 20 years experience in planning/engineering in highway design or bridge design
Professional engineering license or equivalent
Current or past leadership positions within highway/road industry associations including AASHTO, IBTTA and other similar organizations across the globe
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or closely related field
A minimum of 12 years industry experience including leadership
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong skills in client management, client development and a documented history of growing/leading a practice
Strong business skills; specifically handling budgets, staff and operational issues
Strong ability to analyze the marketplace and strategically position HDR
