The Hartford is seeking a decisive, results-driven leader to establish and grow digital and small specialty surety within the Commercial West territory (Midwest, South Central, Southwest, Pacific Northwest). You will lead the development, marketing, and management of a high-volume, transactional surety portfolio—driving performance, expanding market presence, and shaping the future of this segment. This newly established leadership role offers the opportunity to influence strategy, optimize operations, and deliver measurable growth. With authority to set strategy, leverage Hartford’s digital underwriting tools and technology platform, you’ll accelerate performance and deliver value across the Commercial West. Overview

As the lead marketing underwriter, you will be accountable for the region’s book of business and will help build out a team of underwriters over time. Responsibilities

Territory Leadership: Serve as the lead marketing underwriter for the region, responsible for production, servicing, and portfolio oversight. Strategic Planning: Set the digital and small commercial surety business plan for the territory in alignment with the Commercial Surety line strategy. Sales Execution: Drive targeted marketing and sales efforts aligned with Hartford’s appetite and positioning. Market Engagement: Lead marketing activities with agents, brokers, and customers through in-person and virtual channels. Program Management: Recommend and oversee surety programs aligned with underwriting standards and business goals. Team Development: Build and lead a high-performing underwriting team, with accountability for book performance. Technology Enablement: Promote Hartford’s digital capabilities—including API and Bond Sales platforms—to streamline transactions and enhance broker experience. Operational Oversight: Prepare and manage budgets, business plans, and expense controls for efficient and profitable growth. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with regional and Small Specialty underwriting teams to ensure consistency and alignment. Travel: This role requires approximately 30–40% travel across the Commercial West territory to support broker engagement and regional strategy execution. Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience 5+ years of surety underwriting experience or similar credit-oriented/insurance lines Strong relationship-building skills with internal and external business partners Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills Analytical thinker who can identify problems, make recommendations, and implement solutions High-energy self-starter with resilience and an entrepreneurial mindset Solid time, organizational, and desk-management skills Goal-oriented with a track record of delivering results Ability to challenge the status quo and compete to win Strong technical knowledge and sound decision-making and analytical skills Valid driver’s license; company vehicle may be provided Work arrangement

This role has a Hybrid work schedule. Candidates who live near an office location are expected to work in an office or travel for agency work about 3 days per week (Tuesday through Thursday). Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is $69,600 - $168,000 and is based on external market analysis. Actual base pay may vary based on factors including performance, proficiency, and demonstrated competencies. The base pay is one component of Hartford’s total compensation package, which may include bonuses, long-term incentives, and other rewards.
