We’re seeking a Fremont-based engineering manager to lead next-generation large-format cylindrical products, pioneered by Tesla, specifically for EVs. This position offers outsize leverage on the mission to deliver affordable & exhilarating vehicles that accelerate Earth’s transition to sustainable energy! Our vertically-integrated program (from refining to recycling— electrode thru vehicle— hardware + software) uniquely enables full-stack engineering for extreme speed, precision and volume, leveraging troves of internal data, and super-aligned technical partners that carry years of execution pedigree and mass-production wisdom.
Responsibilities
Lead and grow team of 6+ design engineers; own new & derivative versions of Tesla’s in-house 46x cell from initial requirements, through B~C phase development, to factory launch
Define & drive execution of bold projects that optimize cost / performance and neutralize vexing tradeoffs spanning product + factory
Foster respect & seamless collaboration with partner teams (Pack, Vehicle, Programs, Manufacturing, Process, Quality, NPI, Qualification, Supply Chain, CAE) to overcome multi-dimensional technical and business challenges
Establish design tools, protocols, workflows, and documentation that improve efficiency & rigor
Coordinate & drive response to emergent issues (validation, factory, supply, etc.)
Convert leadership direction into results; refine updates, represent team at prog / exec level
Recruit / develop world-class talent, manage performance, and nurture team culture
Set ambitious & quantitative OKRs, inspire employees, maintain high standard of work, justify resources and win leadership alignment
Stay in sync with San Diego & Austin peer managers to progressively elevate design team practices and streamline handoffs between our development & production sites
Master cell technology and the systems that build it
Qualifications
On-site in Fremont, California
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or related specialization or equivalent experience
5 years of technical experience, minimum 2 years demonstrated leadership of other engineers
Sharp engineering 1st principles (in mechanics & heat transfer especially) plus a quantitative mindset, and track record of successfully launched products
Practiced in concept generation, CAD, tolerancing (GD&T), statistical analysis, DFM, DFMEA
Background in design for high-volume & automated precision manufacturing processes
Exceptional technical communication (live reporting, written form, and presentation of data)
Natural inclination to organize / motivate teams of people and improve workflows
Appetite for extreme ownership, hard work, and continuous improvement. We are resilient and deliver in the face of fast timelines, shifting requirements, and concurrent demands
