This classification is a safety-sensitive position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations and/or the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act. As a safety-sensitive classification, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening. Possession of a medical marijuana certification will not excuse you from the testing process, or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.
Job Summary: A non-exempt position that is responsible for performing 911 Telecommunicator I and II responsibilities without the need for immediate guidance to perform duties.
Essential Duties:
- Operates the base radio and maintains contact with mobile units to dispatch public safety assistance where needed.
- Cooperates with other law, fire and medical agencies, as necessary.
- Receives and dispatches telephone emergencies.
- Monitors and transmits radio communications, broadcasts orders to law enforcement, fire and medical personnel.
- Coordinates emergency requests.
- Operates a teletypewriter updating and retrieving information related to wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, etc.
- Maintains and validates filing system related to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) entries.
- Maintains and operates computer aided dispatch system.
- Performs other duties assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- Maintain a clear background check.
- Must be able to handle material with confidentiality.
- Must be able to multi-task and handle safety issues in a time sensitive manner.
- Must possess a valid Oklahoma driver's license and maintain driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.
- Must have successfully passed Telecommunicator I and II training.
Supervision Required: Works under direct supervision of the Communications Manager.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- Most of the work is performed indoors in an isolated area.
- Must be able to work under stressful situations.
- Must agree to wear uniform provided and follow the Communications Division uniform policy.
- Must be willing to work different hours, rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.
- Employees work in an office environment and use desk top computers, fax, copier, and other electronic devices.
- Employees are sometimes required to work outside in both normal and abnormal weather conditions as required.
- Employees are occasionally required to bend, stoop and twist when maintaining files.
- Employees may be required to walk up and down stairs.
- Some lifting is required, usually up to at least 25 pounds.
- Must be able to adhere to Shawnee Communications Center and City of Shawnee Policies.
