Expungement Specialist

The Expungement Specialist under general supervision, performs a variety of clerical tasks primarily related to the expungement of criminal records, either misdemeanor or felony cases.

Minimum Qualifications

This position is for current El Paso County Employees with the District Clerks Office ONLY. Acceptable experience and education include a high school diploma or equivalent, and two (2) years of general office experience, with one (1) year of law office to include six (6) months customer service experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Certificates and licenses required depending on area of assignment include a personal mobile smart device required by the hire start date. May require Deputy Clerk deputizing; may require AOP certification. May require or obtain by date of hire a valid driver's license applicable to job responsibilities, with a driving record acceptable to the County of El Paso.

Typical Duties

Essential duties include preparing expunction packets, envelopes and certifying documents for various motions, petitions and orders for expunction; distributing information to appropriate agencies; preparing files for court; sending notices; preparing files for courts; accepting applications; assigning and preparing cases for court proceedings; responding to information requests and questions regarding data on expunction and felony cases; utilizing various resources to conduct research and locate requested information; data entering expungements which are filed either with the County Clerk's Office or District Clerk's Office into an automated data base, and scanning documents for expunction cases; preparing and dispersing Notice of Hearings and Final Orders to all state and federal agencies; maintaining a database of all expunctions filed, disposed, destroyed and deleted; maintaining a retention schedule on expunctions; sealing files; destroying electronic and physical records as directed by Judge; using various office resources and applications to process expunction, as directed by law; utilizing industrial shredders; maintaining confidentiality; substituting, if assigned, for coworkers during temporary absences by performing delegated duties sufficient to maintain continuity of normal operations; committing self to providing excellent customer service and demonstrating commitment through cooperative team and individual efforts; creating a high quality work culture through participation in and emphasis on training and mentoring to develop leadership, management, and technical skills in self and all employees, including safety related training and skills. As members of the County of El Paso Emergency Response System, all El Paso County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to train on emergency response and/or perform certain emergency services at the direction of their supervisor.

Additional Information

Organizational relationships include reporting to a supervisor, directing this non-supervisory position, and having frequent contact with judges, attorneys, legal staff, law enforcement personnel, other public agencies, and the general public. Minimum requirements include knowledge of legal terminology, principles and practices of modern office administration; customer service/public relations practice and procedures; English usage, computer, procedures and equipment including filing systems. Skills/abilities include preparing clear and concise reports; learning the organization, procedures and operating details of the County department to which assigned; performing word processing and data entry; performing routine clerical work including maintenance of appropriate records and preparations of general reports; verifying and cross checking files and data; maintaining confidential records and reports; being tactful and diplomatic in dealing with the public, members and government officials; completing projects on time; operating a personal computer and various software applications.
