Job Overview
The Senior Director, Institutional Giving is directly responsible for the ongoing philanthropic strategy, growth planning, management, and financial oversight of the Institutional Giving team, and will play an integral role in securing and increasing institutional philanthropic support for the mission and strategic priorities of PBS SoCal. An experienced advancement professional, the Senior Director, Institutional Giving leads the Institutional Giving team and is a strategic and critical partner to the Chief Development Officer (CDO). The Senior Director, Institutional Giving will work to build and grow the Institutional Giving program, cultivate and steward relationships with local, regional, and national foundations, government entities, and corporate philanthropy.
The Senior Director, Institutional Giving will serve as the department’s expert on institutional fundraising, and is a dynamic and engaging fundraiser skilled at aligning funder interests and priorities to the strategic needs of the organization. Working closely with the CDO and other team members, the Senior Director, Institutional Giving will develop and execute a comprehensive program, build relationships with funders, and generate organizational revenue. Frequent travel to various regions across Southern California is a requirement for this position.
Primary Duties / Responsibilities
- 40% Strategy and Planning
- Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer and other Advancement colleagues on growth plans for philanthropy, including the development and implementation of strategic revenue-generating activities
- Provide leadership for institutional giving team, including short and long-term goal setting, operational planning, implementation, and deadlines
- Develop outreach strategies in collaboration with Senior Leadership for the greater LA and OC philanthropic communities
- Collaborate with Executive Leadership on developing and implementing long-term strategies for national institutional funders, including stewardship, cultivation efforts, and communication strategies with the prospective organizational funders
- Serve as a representative of PBS SoCal’s Advancement team in the greater philanthropic and public media communities.
- Evaluate public media and fundraising trends nationally and determine applicability for PBS SoCal’s Institutional Giving team
- 35% Institutional Fundraising and Stewardship
- Provide leadership and strategic oversight on all activities related to institutional giving including:
- Oversee systems for timely, high-quality proposals and reports, including narrative development, budget alignment, and cross-departmental collaboration
- Supervise and provide strategic direction to the Institutional Giving team, including subject matter of specific asks, proposal priorities and deadlines, reporting requirements, acknowledgments, and miscellaneous funder requests
- Supervise and manage research protocols and procedures for the IG including ongoing trends and topic-specific funders
- Provide quality control and editorial support to proposals and reports prepared by staff and consultants
- Guide the process of identifying funding opportunities aligned with PBS SoCal’s mission and strategic priorities.
- Write LOIs and proposals as needed if gaps in contracted or team capabilities arise
- Take direct responsibility developing proposals for a portfolio, including arts and culture grants, government grants, miscellaneous “special projects,” and other areas as needed. Host site visits with funders as needed. Ensure PBS SoCal staff are appropriately briefed in advance
- Ensure meaningful and tailored stewardship plans are developed for institutional partners, including site visits, recognition, and communications aligned with grant requirements
- Work with colleagues across PBS SoCal to develop print, digital, and broadcast content that highlights partnerships with institutional funders
- Manage contract and scope of work for contracted grant writers and consultants
- Provide strategic guidance, quality assurance, and alignment to organizational priorities
- 20% Institutional Giving Management
- Recruit, train, manage, and nurture institutional giving staff through goal-setting, mentorship, evaluation, and recognition.
- Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer and the Senior Director Advancement Services to regularly monitor IG revenue goals and expenses
- Act as liaison with the Finance department and maintain on-going communication with finance staff regarding revenue projections for Institutional Giving, expenses and miscellaneous budget needs for grant proposals
- Act as a liaison between Advancement department and other organizational departments including Finance, Administration and Production

- Attend conferences, workshops, webinars, and professional development events

Qualifications
- 7-10 years of institutional giving or fundraising experience and/or experience with foundations, government granting organizations with increasing levels of responsibility
- 3-5 years of management experience
- Bachelor’s degree
- A combination of education and experience
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate and advance relationships strategically and proactively, resulting in six and seven-figure gifts
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write and edit compelling grant proposals, reports, and donor correspondence.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with programs, finance, and senior leadership.
- Skilled at managing a complex workload and multiple, often simultaneous deadlines.
- Ability to influence, inspire, and build trust across internal and external stakeholder groups
- Proven success in relationship-building, proposal writing, persuasive presentations, project management, and working effectively in teams
- Must possess a high degree of initiative, curiosity, and empathy
- Must be able to deal with a diverse population and handle confidential materials with discretion
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact and work with diverse individuals and groups at all organizational levels, both internal and external to the organization
- Ability to travel throughout Southern California (occasional evening and weekend work required)
- Experience should include working with budgets, program grants and government-based grants
- Familiarity with standard office productivity software (e.g. Microsoft Office and 365 programs and products), including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams
- Demonstrated passion for the importance, urgency, exclusivity, and power of Public Media to improve lives in Southern California communities
- Maintain compliance with the PBS SoCal and AFP ethics and standards
Preferred Qualifications
- An advanced degree
- 10+ years working in institutional giving, preferably within a complex philanthropic organization
- Experience working with board members
- Familiarity and experience with the greater Southern California philanthropic community
- Proficiency with constituent management and fundraising software; Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge NXT experience
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, it is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is also required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment
The working conditions are primarily a general office or home setting. However, the position will require off-site travel to donors and/or other such locations as necessary.
