Overview
Staff Research Associate I position at UCSF AIDS and Cancer Specimen Resource (ACSR) Regional Biospecimen Repository (RBR). Under the supervision of the Lab Manager and Senior Staff Research Associate, the SRA I will be responsible for maintaining and managing inventory of specimens and collections housed in the UCSF RBR, including specimens stored at room temperature and ultralow temperature, and for entry of specimen and patient related data into established ACSR databases.
Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate specimen inventory and mapping during re inventory processes; keep electronic records up to date for inventory and annotation files and databases.
- Receive, handle, process, store, and maintain inventory for biological specimens from special specimen collections donated to the ACSR.
- Handle ultra low temperature specimens and equipment; experience with biobanking/biorepository databases REDCap and Freezerworks LIMS is desirable.
- Work with the RBR PI to fulfill specimen requests made to the ACSR by investigators worldwide; interface with ZSFG Pathology Department and collaborating clinicians for prospective sample collection and gather relevant clinical data on acquired specimens.
- Accurately enter, maintain, and search specimen data in the UCSF ACSR REDCap database and Freezerworks LIMS.
- Respond to freezer alerts as appropriate; assist with special projects; attend weekly lab meetings; perform other duties as assigned.
- Travel to different worksite facilities as needed and handle freezer racks of up to 40 50 pounds.
Required Qualifications
- BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of basic laboratory equipment, biobanking techniques and procedures.
- Ability to multi task and prioritize daily activities; highly flexible, motivated, innovative, and creative; sound decision making and strong team player; strong organizational and problem solving skills in a results and deadline oriented environment; able to meet deadlines and work with a high degree of accuracy.
- Willingness to work evenings and or weekends if needed.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook; working knowledge of the internet; experience with data entry.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to interact confidently and professionally with a wide range of internal and external contacts.
- Attention to detail; strong interpersonal skills; ability to coordinate with team members, other departments, and outside institutions; multi-task in a fast paced environment; and ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to work well under pressure, follow direction, complete projects in a timely manner, and prioritize multiple projects to ensure completion by deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in biobanking and or biorepository sciences.
- Experience handling and processing HIV AIDS blood/tissue specimens.
- Experience with ultra low temperature specimens and multi user ultra low temperature storage facilities.
- Basic knowledge of MS Access, REDCap database and Freezerworks database.
- HIPAA training.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure with attention to detail under supervision.
- Experience with electronic medical records.
- Basic knowledge of UCSF and departmental policies for dealing with reimbursement, guidelines for research, confidentiality and HIPAA regulations, following the UCSF mission statement and purpose for research, and a clear understanding of policies and procedures on patient safety and confidentiality; knowledge of guidelines for packing/shipping infectious substances, database building, and data management.
- Experience applying regulatory guidelines: Good Clinical Practice Guidelines; The Protection of Human Research Subjects; Environmental Health and Safety Training; Fire Safety Training.
