Overview
The Rhode Island Public Health Institute (RIPHI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on reducing health disparities in Rhode Island and beyond. RIPHI oversees public health programs, conducts population health research, and trains students and practitioners. RIPHI owns and operates Open Door Health, the state’s first and only LGBTQ+ clinic, offering primary care, sexual health, gender-affirming care, and express STI screening. Open Door Health also hosts a Ryan White HIV treatment program and HIV prevention initiatives. RIPHI founded several innovative food and nutrition programs, including Food on the Move and Nourish Rhode Island. In 2024, RIPHI and Open Door Health launched a statewide initiative to integrate primary care with behavioral health services. RIPHI’s 5-year strategic plan includes launching a new research center and a communications center to support its mission. In the past year, RIPHI secured more than $15 million in grant funding and led advocacy efforts that resulted in new legislation, appropriations, and statewide policy changes related to HIV prevention, access to medicines, food security, and health equity. Position Summary
RIPHI is currently seeking an innovative and enthusiastic Senior Director of Philanthropy to build and oversee our donor relations program and manage fundraising initiatives. A successful candidate will develop RIPHI’s fundraising campaigns, cultivate a donor base, communicate with current and prospective donors, and build a development team. This role involves managing individual and corporate gifts as well as planned and annual giving campaigns. The Senior Director of Philanthropy will be responsible for launching a capital campaign to support a new headquarters to host RIPHI’s team and Open Door Health. The Senior Director of Philanthropy will have the opportunity to be a key player in internal operations (managing development operations, communications strategy) and in external-facing fundraising activities. Responsibilities
Serve as a member of the executive team and work collaboratively with team members to be a key thought partner in the development and execution of organizational priorities, including strategic planning, infrastructure planning, staffing and budgeting. Develop fundraising strategies to support agency activities and ensure streamlined budget development. Create budgets, establish forecasts and prepare evaluations of fundraising activities for the CEO, the Executive Team, and the RIPHI Board of Directors. Over time, establish and grow a philanthropic and fundraising team. Cultivate RIPHI’s development program over the next 2-3 years, including: Creating and maintaining development systems and structures that provide both support and accountability for the department and its activities. Identifying, researching, and cultivating prospects. Creating and overseeing fundraising events. Creating monthly fundraising reports and other database reports as needed. Maintaining ongoing relationships with donors. Lead a capital campaign for RIPHI’s new headquarters, including Open Door Health. Work closely with the senior communications director. Engage Board members as active participants in development efforts. Assist the RIPHI team in grant writing for family and foundation grants. Ensure timely and accurate report deliveries to funders. Process donations and prepare acknowledgement letters and other correspondence. Maintain foundation, corporation and individual donor files. Other duties as needed and assigned by the CEO, Chief Medical Officer, and Chief Financial Officer. Help lead activities for our annual gala. Anticipated Performance Measures
Solid prospect list, development plan, and stewardship plan. New relationships with individual and corporate donor prospects. New gifts with new individual, corporate, and foundation donors. Help lead a successful capital campaign for a new RIPHI and Open-Door Health Building. Requirements
Education, Experience & Knowledge
Executive presence. Ability to thrive in a very fast paced environment in an organization experiencing rapid growth. Ability to work well with the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Financial Officer on fundraising efforts. Appreciation of our deeply innovative culture and appreciation for addressing health disparities and the social determinants of health. Conversant in clinical and public health issues that impact the many diverse populations we serve. Conversant on the scientific issues that undergird our approaches to clinical care and public health programs. A minimum of 10 years' experience in a nonprofit development management position. Successful fundraising from multiple donor types. Demonstrated success in closing major gifts. Have knowledge and experience in fund raising techniques, particularly major gift fundraising. Possess the skills to work with and motivate staff, board members and other volunteers. Be a self-starter and goal driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls. Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Ability to present information concisely and effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to understand and adhere to high levels of discretion and confidentiality. Excellent interpersonal skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Candidates must be comfortable working with diverse staff, clientele and vulnerable populations, including sexual and gender minorities, Latinx populations, people of color, and older adults.
