The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (VCRO) has managerial responsibility for Berkeley's research enterprise. It aims to support campus-wide research efforts, advocate for research needs, and maximize benefits of Berkeley's research to the scholarly community and wider society. The Chief Innovation and Entrepreneurship Officer (CIEO), established in 2020, will oversee the Office of Intellectual Property and Industry Alliances (IPIRA) and related units, aiming to strengthen a network of startup incubators, accelerators, and entrepreneurial programs across campus and beyond. The CIEO will serve as UC Berkeley's ambassador for innovation and entrepreneurship, cultivating strategic partnerships and representing the University with stakeholders in Silicon Valley and beyond. The CIEO role includes line management responsibility for IPIRA units, Berkeley SkyDeck Accelerator, and the Innovative Genomics Institute IP Office, and leadership of related programs such as Bakar Labs, EBI², SCET, NSF I-Corps Bay Area, Haas Entrepreneurship Hub, and other initiatives. The application review date is expected after mid-September; the position will remain open until filled. Responsibilities

The CIEO provides strategic leadership and coordination for UC Berkeley's innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem; unifies campus-wide entrepreneurial efforts; manages key units; and represents the university in external partnerships. Specific responsibilities include: Strategically advance Berkeley's I&E ecosystem to translate knowledge into societal impact, building partnerships and promoting opportunities to students, postdocs, and faculty; ensure alignment with Berkeley's public mission and values. Convene the Innovation & Entrepreneurship (I&E) Council to maximize collaboration and identify opportunities. Work with the VCR to establish a technology advisory board for technology evaluation, IP portfolio management and strategy, and patent-related matters. Provide leadership to teams for intellectual property licensing strategy, prioritizing inventor-friendly interfaces and maximizing campus returns and impact. Develop mechanisms to maximize returns to UC, including collaboration with UCOP; resolve IP and licensing negotiations in collaboration with campus leaders. Serve as ex-officio member of the Berkeley SkyDeck Board of Directors. Required qualifications

Extensive experience in business development, IP management, or investment models supporting innovation and industry transformation. Expert knowledge of entrepreneurship gained through industry experience or academic research. Sophisticated skills in analysis, strategy development, systems planning, and change management. Strong leadership and interpersonal abilities to motivate and influence others. Proven ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders and lead cross-functional teams. Ability to navigate complex, decentralized organizations with political acumen. Conflict management skills and the ability to act persuasively in sensitive situations. Strong management skills for overseeing diverse teams and budgets. Ability to set macro goals and guide subordinate teams toward mission-aligned objectives. Ability to establish metrics to measure unit effectiveness and operational efficiency. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience/training. Preferred qualifications

Entrepreneurial experience in a leveraged organization generating $500M+ in revenue, startup founder experience, or experience with venture capital/private equity portfolio companies. Sophisticated knowledge of administrative management theory and practical application. Advanced degree (MBA, JD, or PhD). Salary & benefits
