Overview Power Grid Engineer - Lead role at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The position focuses on system research on electrical power grid infrastructure analysis with a focus on grid resilience, and participation in business development for the Cyber and Infrastructure Resilience (CIR) program in the Global Security (GS) Principal Associate Directorate. The role requires collaboration with DOE headquarters, national labs, utilities, and vendors in support of CIR’s research portfolio for the DOE Grid Modernization Initiative and the DoD. Location and level will be determined based on candidate experience.

Responsibilities

Lead and support complex research projects with competing priorities and implement advanced research concepts in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Partner with LLNL scientists and engineers to bring research results to practical use in Global Security programs.

Develop CIR program research roadmaps in coordination with program area leads.

Develop internal and external collaborations and contribute to securing funding to meet program goals.

Co-author refereed papers and reports and deliver presentations to diverse audiences.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).

Master’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

Experience in power grid modeling and simulation, analysis, planning, operation, monitoring and control, data analytics, resilience, microgrids, HIL testing, and related areas.

Strong record of technical achievements in power systems engineering (peer-reviewed publications or project leadership).

Ability to use programming languages to support modeling, analysis and visualization of power grids and control systems.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills for collaboration, proposal preparation, and presenting research findings.

Ability to travel off-site, including international travel, for sponsor and customer interaction.

SES.4 Level – Additional Responsibilities

Balance multiple projects to meet deadlines; lead complex projects and mentor staff.

Serve as a primary technical contact with sponsors and contribute to new program development.

Highly advanced experience in power grid areas listed above.

Significant experience as a project manager or principal investigator with high-visibility projects.

Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills for senior management and sponsors.

Desirable Qualifications

PhD in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.

Experience working with DOE, DoD, and other government agencies.

Position Details This is a Career Indefinite position, open to LLNL employees and external candidates.

Security Clearance This position requires a DOE Q-level clearance and the ability to obtain SCI access. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. Random drug testing is required for L or Q cleared employees.
