El Paso County, Colorado, USA . The Department of Public Works (DPW) is seeking a Deputy Executive Director to help shape the future of our county’s infrastructure and services. As second-in-command, you’ll provide vision, oversight, and accountability across all DPW operations, stepping in as Acting Executive Director when needed. This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm or an alternate schedule of Monday – Thursday, 6:30am – 5:00pm; subject to change. Salary range:

$145,000.00 - $157,990.00 annually .

Responsibilities

Provide leadership and guidance across the Department of Public Works divisions to ensure projects remain on schedule and services run efficiently.

Develop and execute policies, programs, and projects that address community needs and adhere to laws and regulations.

Manage staff development, hiring, and performance, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.

Represent the Department of Public Works before the Board of County Commissioners, advisory committees, and community stakeholders.

Collaborate with partner departments and external agencies to achieve shared goals.

Serve as Acting Executive Director when required, ensuring continuity and strong decision-making.

Provides fiscal oversight and budgetary analysis related to projects, staff allocation, and contract budgets for all assigned areas.

Develops and delivers presentations to the Board of County Commissioners, elected officials, Highway Advisory Committee, and community organizations concerning DPW programs and related issues.

Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices associated with public works.

Ability to direct and lead professional, technical, operational, and administrative support personnel; ability to train and objectively review and evaluate the performance of others.

Ability to develop and implement new and innovative plans, initiatives, and strategies.

Ability to efficiently and effectively implement the County Strategic Plan and DPW projects and objectives.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including the ability to effectively deliver presentations.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees, Elected Officials, community agencies, vendors, and the public. Ability to provide excellent customer service.

Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Required Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Four years of related professional experience may substitute for the required degree.

Five years of supervisory or management experience, including planning, organizing, and directing projects.

Licenses / Certificates

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, and drug screen.

Work Conditions Duties are primarily performed in an office environment; some travel to job sites and meetings may be required. Subject to emergency off hours call-out.
