At Webster Bank, our financial intermediation activities are organized around three lines of business: the Consumer Bank, the Commercial Bank, and HSA Bank. This position will be aligned with the Commercial Bank. The Commercial Banking group delivers solutions to a wide range of clients; our team includes expertise in Commercial & Institutional Lending, Commercial Real Estate, Capital Markets, and Treasury Management. Our Wealth Management team provides holistic wealth solutions with commercial banking services.

The Director, Underwriting Leasing will contribute to a team that supports Equipment Finance, partnering with relationship managers to underwrite new loans and leases to finance equipment purchases and manage existing portfolios. The role will be a player/coach, overseeing day-to-day managerial duties of the centralized team for direct lending, as well as underwriting and managing transactions.

Responsibilities

Lead underwriting due diligence, partner with relationship managers, and prepare high-quality credit approval documents. Review operating performance, assess current/expected financial condition, identify risks and mitigants, note variances to policy, and assign accurate risk ratings with justification.

Interface with clients and other stakeholders to facilitate the underwriting process.

Detail debt financings and company financials using Excel and Webster’s credit management platform (Sageworks).

Support credit approval discussions.

Portfolio Management

Review, spread, and maintain periodic financial statements and compliance certificates.

Engage with borrowers’ CFOs to obtain qualitative performance updates.

Ensure renewals, annual reviews, and interim analyses are completed on a timely basis.

Present internal portfolio review memos to senior credit executives at periodic meetings.

Monitor portfolio risk grades and ensure high-risk credits are tracked with quarterly problem asset reports.

Maintain ticklers, covenants, document library, and other items in Webster’s credit system of record.

Meet Credit Risk Review, Audit and OCC requirements for acceptable reviews.

Ensure compliance with all regulations, policies and procedures.

Other

Generate new ideas and recommendations for continuous process improvement.

Participate in special projects as needed.

Education, Experience & Skills

Education: Bachelor’s degree; courses in accounting and finance preferred.

Experience: 7–10 years of professional experience in commercial banking underwriting and/or portfolio management preferred.

Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.

Strong written and verbal communication.

Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel and PowerPoint.

Good interpersonal skills to interface with relationship managers, portfolio managers, credit officers, clients, and senior management.

Locations: Connecticut (Stamford); New York (Manhattan, White Plains, Jericho); New Jersey (Paramus). Hybrid schedule available if appropriate.

Compensation: The estimated base salary range for this position is $140,000–$160,000 USD. Actual salary may vary based on knowledge, skills, experience and location. This position is eligible for incentive compensation.
