We're hiring skilled and passionate Recreation Specialists to support a variety of specialized programs we hold for the public. We're seeking individuals who have specialized skills and can continue providing recreational opportunities to the public we serve.
The incumbents selected for these positions can expect to work varied hours, based on the needs of the programs supported. Hours will be limited to no more than 28 per week, and 999 per year. Flexible schedules, including a variety of weekday and weekend shifts may be available.

Recreation Specialist
positionsin the Outdoor Recreation Department to continue offering recreational programs for the remainder of 2025 and into the 2026 season. These positions will be headquartered in Oakland, CA.
Tentative Schedule for two processes being held simultaneously: Initial Applicant Screening: 9/12/2025 Interviews for initially screened applicants: 9/19/2025 - 10/17/2025 Candidates that apply and are included in this initial screening can anticipate to be hired in October of 2025.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
Recreation Specialist is the specialty position in this series, with principle duties as the program lead and overall supervision of program participants. Positions in this classification are responsible for program planning, leading, and oversight of all program activities, and may transport program participants and staff.
Essential Functions
Serves as program lead for participants and staff on a variety of outdoor recreational activities and assignments including special events, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, biking, and other Park District programs; Facilitates the delivery of recreational programs through the procurement of materials and supplies, and may perform hands-on service delivery; May collaborate with the Outdoor Recreation Coordinator to develop programs; contributes to performance appraisals of Recreation Leaders. OTHER FUNCTIONS & DUTIES
May assist the Outdoor Recreation Coordinator and/or Recreation Assistant in one or more of the following areas: responding to public inquiries and preparing necessary support documents, reports, analyses, and recommendations; Assisting in researching and organizing agreements with potential instructors and service providers; Assisting with marketing and promotional efforts; Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
Age: 18 or older at the time of appointment. Experience: Must have completed at least one season of recent experience comparable to a Recreation Leader I/II with East Bay Regional Park District. License or Certificates: Possession of a valid class C California Driver's License is a condition of initial and continued employment. Must obtain Basic First Aid and CPR certification within 30 days of initial job offer. Other: Bilingual or multi-lingual skills are highly desirable.

Knowledge of:
leading, demonstrating, and directing recreation programming with adult and youth participants; recreational programs, special events, and volunteer activities suitable for various age groups; first aid and CPR; office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
Ability to:
lead diverse individuals and groups of teens, pre-teens, and adults, including at-risk youth; plan, organize, and conduct recreation activities; teach and lead skills, motivate staff, and serve as a positive role model; manage groups effectively and safely; effective verbal and written communication skills; lift and carry up to 25 pounds; operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse public, with a focus on quality service to internal staff and external customers. Must be able to stand, walk, twist, bend, reach above and below shoulders, lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds, and depending upon assignment, may be required to swim, ride a bike, hike, kayak, canoe, or perform other applicable physical duties. Conditions of Employment:
Must pass a Level 2 background check and subject to tuberculosis (TB) clearance.
Required to wear a Park District uniform.
May be required to work unusual hours, weekends, and holidays.
This position is designated as a Mandated Reporter under the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA). Mandated reporters are individuals who are obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect. As such, you will be required to sign an acknowledgment of having received the District's policy and your responsibilities.
Incumbents in this classification are limited to working up to 28 hours per week, not to exceed 999 hours per fiscal year (July 1 through June 30).
Recreation Specialists are required to work 1 year with a minimum of 350 hours before progressing to the next pay step.
