We’re seeking a Principal Applied Scientist to spearhead the next generation of AI-driven shopping experiences. As a key scientific advisor to our organization, you will pioneer breakthrough solutions in Generative AI, Agentic AI, and Large Language Models (LLMs) to revolutionize commerce at unprecedented scale. This role offers a unique opportunity to tackle complex, open-research problems at the intersection of e-commerce, conversational AI, and machine learning. Using Amazon’s large-scale computing resources, you will design and deploy state-of-the-art models that help customers shop on Amazon. You will participate in the larger Amazon ML community and mentor Applied Scientists and software development engineers with a strong interest in and knowledge of ML and generative AI. Your work will directly benefit the millions of customers who shop on Amazon.

We are looking for a passionate, hard-working, and talented Applied Scientist who has experience developing state-of-the-art models and deploying them to production. You will have an opportunity to make an enormous impact on the design, architecture, and implementation of innovative products used everyday by people you know.

Responsibilities

Lead development and deployment of state-of-the-art generative AI, agentic AI, and LLM solutions to enhance shopping experiences at scale.

Serve as a scientific advisor, tackling open research problems at the intersection of e-commerce, conversational AI, and ML.

Design experiments, analyze results, and communicate findings to cross-functional teams and leadership.

Collaborate with the Amazon ML community and mentor Applied Scientists and SDEs interested in ML and generative AI.

Contribute to the architecture, design, and implementation of innovative products used by millions of customers.

Qualifications

3+ years of building machine learning models for business applications.

PhD, or Master’s degree and 6+ years of applied research experience.

Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language.

Experience with neural deep learning methods and machine learning.

Experience with modeling tools such as R, scikit-learn, Spark MLLib, MxNet, TensorFlow, NumPy, SciPy, etc.

Experience with large-scale distributed systems such as Hadoop, Spark, etc.

Compensation Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $179,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $309,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
