The Airport Department is seeking an Airport Operations Superintendent I/II in the newly-added Safety Management System (SMS) position within the Airside Section.

Plan, implement, and operate the Airport’s SMS Programs, FAR139-mandated Emergency Planning, and Airside Construction in accordance with FAA requirements. Serve as the primary administrator of the Airport’s SMS program to ensure compliance and promote a safe work environment, emergency planning, airside construction procedures, and related operations. Provide leadership and supervision for staff; interact regularly with Airport customers, contractors, tenants, government agencies, and other City departments. Interpret complex regulations and utilize various computer programs and software (Microsoft Office suite and proprietary systems); demonstrate a strong technical background or the ability to learn new technology. Manage programs across sections within Airport Operations (Airside, Landside, Terminal/Customer Service, Security) with responsibilities including airfield operations, Manager-On-Duty, noise monitoring, general aviation, public parking, shuttle and ground transportation, curbside traffic control, terminal management, customer experience, security compliance, airport ID badging, and Airport Operations Center (AOC) functions. Shift coverage includes Monday–Friday day shifts with possible additional shifts to ensure supervision; provide stand-by support to vended services and the Manager-on-Duty 24/7 as needed. Qualifications
Airport Operations Superintendent I
– Bachelor’s degree in aviation or a closely related field AND four (4) years of aviation experience, including two (2) years as Airport Operations Supervisor I or higher. Aviation experience typically gained through airports, airlines, fixed base operators, aviation contractors, aviation-related government agencies, or military aviation. Airport Operations Superintendent II
– Bachelor’s degree in aviation or a closely related field AND two (2) certifications from an airport industry professional organization AND six (6) years of aviation experience, including two (2) years at the level of Airport Operations Superintendent I. Acceptable Substitution
– Additional aviation experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis. Licensing
Incumbents must complete and pass a TSA-mandated Criminal History Records Check and Security Threat Assessment, and meet all City, State, or Federal requirements. California Driver's License. Obtain an Airport-issued Ramp Drivers Permit and Movement Area Operating Permit within 6 months of employment.
