Overview

About Rune: Rune helps solar and wind power plants turn financial and operational losses into revenue. We deploy hardware, software, and financial solutions to monetize energy that would otherwise go to waste. Our flagship product, the RELIC, is a modular demand response system that uses interruptible compute to capture value from curtailments, inverter outages, inverter clipping, and other sources of lost generation. We design and operate a vertically integrated stack that spans predictive energy forecasting, real-time control systems, edge computing, and hardware orchestration at scale. Rune is backed by leading investors including Union Square Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, and Vestas Ventures, among others. Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer at Rune, you will help build core infrastructure powering Runes deployments including our control center, post-deployment reliability systems, and power plant controller (PPC) integrations for both wind and solar assets. Youll work across our Deploy and Pipeline teams to bridge operational control with renewable energy coordination, helping scale Runes footprint and reliability across new geographies and energy partners. Key Responsibilities Pillar I Deploy

Design, implement, and maintain the Rune Control Center, the primary interface for deploying, monitoring, and managing field infrastructure. Develop tools for post-deployment quality control, enabling fault detection, issue triage, and performance benchmarking at the edge. Collaborate with firmware, hardware, and deployment teams to tightly integrate telemetry, diagnostics, and alerting.

Pillar I & II Deploy + Pipeline

Build and maintain PPC integrations, enabling coordination with wind and solar power plants at the edge. Implement protocols and control logic to interoperate with inverters, SCADA systems, and grid signals (e.g., Modbus, OPC-UA). Translate grid curtailment signals, frequency response, and voltage/watt control requirements into actionable compute load modulation.

Ideal Qualifications

Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science, or a related field. 2-5+ years of experience building infrastructure, systems software, or industrial control applications. Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C++). Familiarity with industrial protocols and real-time control systems. Proven experience with cloud platforms. Experience working with renewable energy systems, power electronics, or plant-level integrations is a plus. Strong debugging and systems thinking comfortable working close to hardware and across software layers.

Nice to Have

Experience with SCADA/HMI systems or energy telemetry platforms. Background in wind/solar inverter integration, grid-tied systems, or energy forecasting. Exposure to containerized deployment (Docker/Kubernetes), observability tools, or site automation. Experience with IoT devices and edge computing is a plus for example, working with platforms like NVIDIA Jetson, Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone, or similar embedded systems.

Benefits

Competitive salary Option grants in a fast-growing, well-funded technology company. Comprehensive, premium healthcare packages for employees and their dependents.
