Overview

Reporting to the Interim Director of Development, the Major Gifts Officer will collaborate with colleagues to develop and execute organizational fundraising strategies in support of a $4.5 million annual budget that is 97% philanthropically funded. The Major Gifts Officer works to expand our current base of support to new constituencies, secure support from the base and new constituencies, and steward to help maintain organizational sustainability. In a collaborative environment, the Major Gifts Officer supports the President, Interim Director of Development, and Stewardship Manager to grow individual, foundation and corporate giving. The Major Gifts Officer is a key driver of major gifts strategy at DMA, with an ability to identify and execute both yearly and long-term fundraising goals. The Major Gifts Officer is also an active representative of DMA in the local San Francisco community and expanding the organization's image and reach into new constituencies. The role requires balancing ongoing operations, team leadership, and strategic donor and external relations, with a focus on educational equity and De Marillac Academy’s 25th Anniversary in 2026.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fundraising and Donor Relations: Develop and manage a portfolio of major gift prospects for annual and campaign giving, fostering relationships through personalized communication and outreach.
  • Create personal solicitation plans, including cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Identify new donors and constituencies with major gift-level capacities to meet fundraising goals.
  • Collaborate on the development of the 25th Anniversary campaign and meet individual and team goals.
  • Assist in the fundraising and execution of the Annual Scholarship Benefit, in collaboration with the Interim Director of Development and Stewardship Manager.
  • Track and regularly report progress towards fundraising goals. Ensure high-quality donor stewardship and philanthropic experience for all donor visits.
  • Support the Planned Giving program, partnering with the President and Interim Director of Development to build this into solicitation strategy.
  • Other Responsibilities: Provide back-up support at De Marillac as needed and participate in school life (e.g., helping in classrooms, chaperoning field trips, supervising lunch and recess when coverage is needed) to foster team spirit and inspire new ideas for the Development team.
  • Participate in Alumni, Professional Development, and school activities. Strengthen partnerships across educational, non-profit, and other supporting organizations, upholding DMA’s community covenant and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Safeguard the best interests of students, families, staff, and the Tenderloin community; maintain a high profile at events in Tenderloin, San Francisco, and Catholic communities; attend workshops and conferences for professional growth.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by the Interim Director of Development.

Requirements

Education and Experience : Bachelor’s Degree or commensurate experience required; at least five years of nonprofit fundraising and major gifts solicitation experience; experience working on a fundraising campaign; demonstrated success in major gift solicitation, capital campaigns, and donor relations.

Technical Competencies : Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, G-Suite, and social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn); experience with Raiser’s Edge (or comparable fundraising database).

Skills and Abilities : Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with diverse constituencies including Board of Trustees, Development Council members, individual donors, foundations, corporate and community partners, colleagues, volunteers, vendors, and teaching staff. Strong attention to detail; organized donor follow-through and stewardship; able to balance competing priorities in a small team within a fast-paced environment. Ability to foster teamwork, work independently, prioritize workflow, and plan effectively. Passion for social justice and educational equity; familiarity with working with underserved and historically marginalized communities; enthusiastic and collaborative with an interest in building community and relationships. Ability to prioritize, adapt quickly, and be accountable. Some evening and weekend responsibilities.

Compensation

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience; range is $95,000–$110,000 annually. Comprehensive benefits, transportation stipend, spiritual formation opportunities, and year-long professional development are included.
