Departmental Overview
The University of California Police Department provides a full range of law enforcement services in support of the academic and public service missions of the University of California. We serve a diverse community of more than 43,000 students and 14,000 faculty & staff in Berkeley and carry out proactive educational, outreach and crime prevention programs. We pride ourselves on a professional and high-quality delivery of service with sensitivity to the University community's concerns. We employ approximately 44 sworn peace officers, 70 full-time civilian employees and 75 part-time students. We offer a wide variety of assignments and a public service experience unlike any other agency.
Position Summary
Provide public safety services on campus and on properties owned, controlled, or occupied by the University. Engage in preventive patrols on foot and by vehicle. Respond to calls for service from University personnel and the public. Make constitutional criminal arrests under the 4th amendment and prepare necessary documentation to testify in court. Conduct investigations. Provide for security and safety of property and persons at University public ceremonies and events. Maintain custody and disposal of lost and found property. Candidates with certification of graduation from a POST basic academy are considered lateral entry and are sworn in as Police Officers on date of hire.

Responsibilities
- Protects university employees, students, and the general public; patrols and safeguards university property; maintains law and order; and performs related duties. Patrols campus buildings and grounds; protects individuals and/or controls crowds during assemblies or disturbances; guards property against fire, theft, vandalism and illegal entry. Takes proper police action at the scene of a crime, including first aid, gathering evidence, locating witnesses, and making arrests.
- Gathers, analyzes, investigates and prepares written reports on accidents, property damage, fires, law violations, thefts and disturbances of the peace. Gathers/analyzes evidence, makes arrests, and appears in court as required.
- May direct and control parking regulations and issue traffic citations.
- Training and development; Other duties as assigned.
- Works with City of Berkeley police force as required.
Required Qualifications
- Thorough knowledge in First Aid/CPR, campus streets, buildings, and parking lots; general law enforcement procedures, vehicle laws, and use of firearms.
- Able to observe situations analytically, impartially, and objectively, and to record pertinent information accurately and completely.
- Carries a firearm.
- Must be a US citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
- Must have no felony convictions.
- Excellent verbal and written skills and the ability to interact with a diverse community.
- Excellent ability to use computer devices and programs and other modern law enforcement technologies and tools.
- Thorough understanding of modern policing issues, philosophies, practices and trends applied within the University environment.
- Meet all other requirements for peace officers as established by law and the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
Education
- High school diploma and/or equivalent certification/experience/training.
Licenses/Certification
- Must maintain valid CA driver's license and clean DMV record.
- Completion of basic P.O.S.T. certification or successful completion of the Regular Basic Course within the past 3 years.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor\'s Degree or higher.
Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) non-exempt career position, paid hourly and eligible for UC Benefits. For information on the benefits package, visit UC Berkeley Compensation & Benefits. The posted compensation range is $50.61 (step 1.0) - $61.17 (step 5.0) hourly, with a $12,000 hiring bonus included.
