Manager, Video Production Planning

The New York Times Video department is looking for a Manager, Video Production Planning to work across a multi-disciplinary team of video journalists creating groundbreaking, short-form journalism.

We are continuing to expand our video journalism, identifying compelling visual stories across the depth and breadth of our report. We showcase the expertise of Times journalists on-camera, share urgent news updates, produce on-the-ground reporting, pioneering Visual Investigations and video podcasts. You will help oversee the planning and organization of the entire video department's work, with a strong focus on logistics, scheduling and project management.

You have a full understanding of newsroom video production, are a strategic thinker and are a great multitasker. You work autonomously and are able to prioritize. You have a strong command of the digital video landscape and a track record of collaboration and efficiently managing the work of others.

This is a hybrid position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and oversee team-wide production planning workflows the production and planning across the entire video department.
  • Manage additional planning coordinators for video teams as needed, providing feedback, setting goals and conducting regular reviews including soliciting input from team leadership with whom this team would work day to day.
  • Manage video department-wide futures news planning calendar, which tracks key news events and projects.
  • Coordinate video programming and publishing across all parts of the news video operation, making strategic decisions and communicating with senior leaders across the newsroom
  • Maintain project status across key video productions, and work with stakeholders to drive progress, solve problems, and hit deadlines, especially for ambitious initiatives and new experiments
  • Manage shift rotations, to ensure proper evening, weekend, holiday coverage
  • Manage video project handoff among staff in different time zones or shifts
  • Track the scheduling of editorial content, alongside an editorial partner
  • Work with Audience partners to ensure Video's work is linked to and surfaced or resurfaced on and off platform
  • Engage in dialogue with critical stakeholders on individual sub brands
  • Work closely with editorial team leads to track multiple projects and ensure daily deadlines are met
  • Partner with the Production Manager to facilitate logistics from pre- to -post-production
  • Develop workflows and identify efficiencies aimed at scaling video production
  • Safeguard sensitive information related to upcoming projects, organizational objectives, and long-term strategic visions.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • You will report to the Director of Video Operations and Strategy

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience planning and coordinating video production in a newsroom
  • 2+ years of people management experience
  • Experience working on or adjacent to video journalism and production
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace and Airtable
  • Proven organizational and project management skills
  • Basic data analysis skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal oral and written communications skills
  • Experience in high-growth environments
  • Familiarity with video production software and equipment
  • An eagerness to work on a team that values trust, transparency, collaboration and empathy as workplace principles
  • A passion for news as well as learning about new tools and journalism formats
  • A track record of developing strong and trusting relationships, collaborating and building consensus
  • Willingness to pitch in after hours or on weekends when breaking news demands

The annual base pay range for this role is between $140,000 - $160,000 USD
