Overview Director of Engineering

at a biotech company in the San Francisco Bay Area (2-3 days per week). Base pay range:

$200,000 - $240,000

per year, with equity offered. This is a fast-paced, early-stage environment that values collaboration, agility, and impact.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with leadership, product, and engineering teams to define project goals, identify dependencies, and establish timelines.

Provide technical oversight and strategic direction for engineering projects.

Manage and mentor backend engineering teams, including hiring, evaluating, and supporting team development.

Oversee system implementation, maintenance, security, and upgrades in a regulated environment.

Ensure high system availability, security, and seamless integration with external partners.

Allocate time across management (60%), technical leadership (30%), and hands-on coding (10%).

Must-Have Qualifications

Strong experience with

Python, Django, REST APIs, Linux, system design, and AWS .

Deep knowledge of

modern software development practices , including unit testing, CI/CD, DevOps, logging, and monitoring.

Experience managing engineering teams in a startup or fast-paced environment.

Excellent communication and organizational skills with familiarity in Agile methodologies.

Ability to balance scrappy solutions with production-grade systems, adapting to changing priorities.

Previous experience in

biotech, healthcare, or genetic testing

environments.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

Familiarity with

React, Terraform, Kubernetes, networking, and Docker .

Experience leading teams in a regulated industry.
