Department Summary:

The UNT Dallas Learning Commons offers tutorial assistance in various subjects to students who need supplemental academic support. This position serves as a Developmental Math Specialist, working under supervision to tutor students with developmental coursework, develop resources, market services, and assist with administrative tasks.

Position Overview The Professional STEM Tutor should:

Be aware of and able to use a variety of strategies for students with a wide range of academic skills

Provide tutoring in the subject area, including clarification of assignments, lectures, and tests

Help students develop positive learning skills (study techniques, notetaking, test-taking)

Foster participatory learning and active student involvement

Aid students in understanding concepts without giving away answers or completing assignments

Refer students to Learning Commons resources and other academic services as needed

Work assigned hours per week unless prior arrangements are made with the supervisor

Attend required trainings and staff meetings

Interpret and clarify Learning Commons procedures and lead presentations to advertise services

Familiarize with all Learning Commons resources (handouts, reference books, videos, etc.)

Assist administrative staff with special projects and events

Help prepare resources including handouts, workshops, website content, social media posts, and videos

Assist in scheduling appointments and maintaining detailed student records; monitor and analyze attendance, persistence, retention, and satisfaction data

Serve as a liaison between the Learning Commons and UNT Dallas academic community, keeping instructors informed of tutoring activity

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or higher with coursework in related STEM field

1-3 years of tutoring experience in an academic setting

Excellent communication skills

Intermediate to advanced knowledge in the subject area to be tutored

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills

Empathy and ability to relate to the student body population at UNT Dallas

Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills

Ability to work independently and with others

Ability to take direction and instruction

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public

Telephone etiquette and courteous written and verbal communication

Basic MS Office skills

Ability to operate office machines and use web-based software (e.g., Zoom) to tutor online

Filing and recordkeeping skills

Preferred Qualifications

Experience tutoring/teaching college students

Master’s degree or graduate-level coursework in related field

Experience assisting students with developmental coursework and college readiness skills

Strong knowledge of FERPA

Experience providing workshops, training, and/or test preparation

Spanish or another foreign language knowledge is encouraged but not required

Required License/Registration/Certifications Job Duties

Interpret and clarify Learning Commons procedures to students, tutors, and visitors; lead presentations to advertise services

Aid students in understanding concepts without completing assignments for them

Provide tutoring and clarify course material

Work as Embedded Tutor alongside faculty in classrooms

Maintain student records; monitor and analyze attendance, persistence, retention, and satisfaction

Assist with special assignments, projects, and events

Work Schedule MON-THURS: 10A-10P; FRI-SAT: 12P-7P

Other Details No driving of university vehicle. This is a Security Sensitive Position.
