Job Overview The University Law Officer performs law enforcement functions on University property to protect the life, well-being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and others through policing, patrol, event security, investigation, access control systems, circulation and safety systems, arrests, and emergency response, as outlined in General Orders and Special Orders, and as proscribed in the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Training Academy (or equivalent) and other departmental trainings. The role supports the University community by providing information and assistance.

Work Interactions This position reports to the Police Sergeant and works with other Police Officers, Communication Officers and Specialists, Security Officers, and Student Guards. It is considered essential under University policy and may require on-call availability. The role may require extended hours, rotating shifts (day, evening, overnight), and fluctuating days off based on departmental needs.

Requirements And Qualifications

High School Diploma (or equivalent) required

U.S. Citizenship required

Must be at least 21 years of age

Valid driver’s license with ability to pass Georgetown University driver’s certification

Subject to written test, report writing test, drug test, medical examination, and extensive psychological testing

Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation

For Non-Lateral Hires: Eligible to obtain and maintain a Campus Special Police Officer Commission and complete required university police training, including certification in Arrest Control Tactics, Baton, and OC-based Aerosol Subject Restraint; training includes successful completion of the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy within probation

For Lateral Hires: Current certification in Baton/OC Spray; certified training from a CU-LEA or equivalent; basic to intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and police procedures

Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Word and email

Professional, courteous demeanor with strong verbal and written communication skills
