Job Summary
The Director of Research and Innovation will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the research and innovation initiatives at the Road Home Program (RHP). This role guides the lifecycle of treatment development and health technology, from initial concept and user-need identification to securing funding and evaluating efficacy through randomized controlled trials. The Director will manage a diverse team of clinicians, researchers, and data scientists, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. This position is ideal for a visionary leader who leverages advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to create scalable, personalized, and effective mental health interventions for veterans and their families.
Responsibilities
Lead strategic leadership and program development for the Road Home Program and Rush University Medical Center. Oversee design and implementation of clinical trials to evaluate novel treatments and interventions, including evidence-based psychotherapies augmented with innovative therapeutic strategies. Drive end-to-end development of patient-facing and clinician-facing generative AI platforms to enhance engagement, care delivery, and clinical training at scale. Direct program evaluation efforts to assess effectiveness and efficiency of clinical services using data-driven insights. Pioneer predictive mental health models using continuously updating clinical data to personalize patient care. Champion innovative research methods to inform individualized treatment protocols. Direct a large, nationwide clinical and research program with substantial operating budgets and numerous direct reports, including faculty, research managers, statisticians, data scientists, and clinical staff. Mentor and supervise postdoctoral fellows, research assistants, and junior faculty to support career development and grant success. Secure funding from federal, foundation, and philanthropic sources (e.g., DoD, NIH, Wounded Warrior Project) to support research and innovation. Represent the institution on committees to establish ethical guidelines, data analysis, and governance policies in clinical settings. Author and co-author high-impact, peer-reviewed articles and present findings at national and international conferences.
Required Qualifications
Education and Licensure: A Ph.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited program or related field. Licensed or license-eligible as a Clinical Psychologist in the state of Illinois. Experience: At least 8 years of post-doctoral experience in mental health research, with a focus on PTSD, trauma-related disorders, and veteran populations. Demonstrated success as a Principal Investigator or Research Director with a track record of securing major federal and foundation grants. Extensive experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating machine learning and generative AI tools for mental health applications. Proven leadership in managing large, interdisciplinary teams and significant operating budgets. Skills and Competencies: Expertise in advanced statistical methods, predictive analytics, and research design for clinical trials and health services research. Strong understanding of ethical AI, data governance, and patient data protection. Ability to translate research findings into clinical practice quickly. Strong publication record and experience presenting at major conferences. Excellent strategic planning, program management, and stakeholder collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Specialized Training: Advanced training in evidence-based psychotherapies for PTSD (e.g., CPT, PE) is highly preferred. Programmatic Experience: Direct experience with veteran-focused healthcare programs and multi-site research projects. History of mentoring postdoctoral fellows and research staff who advanced to faculty or independent careers.
Physical Demands
Physical: Sedentary office work; ability to operate a computer and office equipment for extended periods. Occasional travel to national or international conferences and meetings. Mental: High-demand executive role requiring sustained concentration, strategic planning, and complex problem-solving to manage budgets, oversee trials, lead staff, and navigate ethical and data governance issues.
