Job Overview

The Senior Director of Intellectual Property (IP) provides strategic IP counsel to the business on a broad range of scientific and IP issues. This role reports to the Vice President, Intellectual Property and supports multiple programs at different development stages. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of patent law, Orange Book listings, ANDA litigation, and brings creative strategies to protect Kardigan’s efforts. This position offers the opportunity to own IP strategy for a late-stage program through potential launch, while also shaping IP strategy for early-stage research and managing the full lifecycle of innovation from discovery through commercialization. This position reports to the Vice President of Intellectual Property and may be located in Princeton, NJ or South San Francisco, CA.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Conceptualize, develop, implement, and manage intellectual property portfolio strategies worldwide to maximize value and utility of IP assets for current and future commercial assets Independently provide expert IP advice to senior scientific and business leaders and demonstrate thoughtful risk management in decision making Identify and prepare patent applications, manage patent prosecution, and oversee annual patent portfolio management Collaborate with Kardigan functions to ensure IP is identified, captured, and filed Oversee strategies for addressing competitor IP, including oppositions, post-grant reviews, inter-partes reviews, and re-examinations Provide IP transactional support for business transactions, clinical agreements, collaborative research agreements, and license and acquisition agreements Manage relationships with external legal counsel and vendors Lead IP counsel for one of Kardigan’s late-stage programs through potential regulatory approval and commercial launch Develop IP strategy to support early-stage research and protect innovation for long-term value

Qualifications and Preferred Skills

Advanced degree in chemical sciences with synthetic laboratory experience; Ph.D. in organic chemistry is beneficial Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school Admitted to the bar of at least one U.S. State or the District of Columbia Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) 8-10+ years of professional legal experience as a patent professional Experience as in-house counsel in a pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical/biotechnology setting, managing complex patent portfolios and product support Excellent communication and negotiation skills, including the ability to convey IP issues to senior leadership and manage external counsel Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment Proactive, results-driven, with an ability to anticipate IP risks and opportunities Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in portfolio management Committed to a patient-first mentality

Compensation

Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience and location. Pay range:

$275,000 - $358,000 USD
