South San Francisco, CA or Princeton, NJ – On-site 4 days per week (Mon to Thurs) Job Overview The Senior Director of Intellectual Property (IP) is a seasoned IP attorney providing strategic IP advice to the business on a broad range of scientific and IP legal issues. This role reports to the Vice President, Intellectual Property and supports IP for programs at various development stages. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of patent law, Orange Book listings, ANDA litigation, and will proactively protect Kardigan’s efforts. This role offers ownership of IP strategy for a late-stage program through potential launch and IP strategy for early-stage research, enabling management of the full lifecycle of innovation from discovery through commercialization. This position may be located in Princeton, NJ or South San Francisco, CA and will have one opening. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Conceptualize, develop, implement, and manage global IP portfolio strategies to maximize value of IP assets for current and future commercial assets Provide expert IP advice to senior scientific and business leaders and demonstrate thoughtful risk management Identify and prepare patent applications, prosecute patents, and manage annual portfolio activities Collaborate with Kardigan functions to ensure IP is identified, captured, and filed Oversee strategies for addressing competitor IP, including oppositions, post-grant reviews, inter-partes reviews, and re-examinations Provide IP transactional support for business transactions, clinical agreements, collaboration agreements, licenses and acquisitions Manage relationships with external counsel and vendors Lead IP counsel for a late-stage program through potential regulatory approval and launch Lead IP strategy for early-stage research to protect innovation and create long-term value Qualifications and Preferred Skills Advanced degree in chemical sciences with synthetic laboratory experience required (Ph.D. in organic chemistry beneficial) Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school Admitted to the bar in at least one U.S. state or the District of Columbia Registered to practice before the USPTO 8-10+ years of professional IP/legal experience as a patent professional Prior in-house experience in a pharmaceutical/biotech company with management of complex patent portfolios Excellent communication and negotiation skills; ability to convey complex IP issues to senior leadership and manage external counsel Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment Proactive, results-driven with awareness of IP risks and opportunities Well-organized with strong portfolio management capabilities Supports a patient-first mentality Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
