Overview
Principal Application Engineer Utility Scale Storage is a subject matter expert for Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS). Duties include consulting with customers in North America, Mexico, and Central America by analyzing system specifications and requirements, reviewing and proposing system designs based on expert knowledge, answering advanced technical questions, developing and presenting internal sales materials, and collaborating with the SMA sales and service organization including joint customer visits. Primary Duties / Responsibilities
Serves as a Subject matter expert for SMA and assists customers in BESS project designs by answering technical questions via telephone, e-mail and/or face-to-face meetings. Reviews customer and utility interconnection requirements and helps select the right SMA products, solutions, and services. Assists customers in the project design process. Supports key customers and EPC customer base. Deep technical knowledge of BESS control architecture, selection of inverter solutions based on project requirements, integration with Energy Management Systems and overall project design. Creates and delivers internal and external technical training, mentors Application Engineers, Sales, and Service colleagues. Creates sales materials to be used by the sales staff during meetings with existing customers and potential new clients. Conducts competitor analysis and provides technical argumentation to successfully compete against the analyzed products and/or solutions. Attends industry conferences and trade shows as necessary. Serves as a liaison between the US sales team and the technical team at SMA HQ in Germany. Interfaces with product management and engineering. Other duties as may be required or assigned. Required Qualifications
A bachelors degree in electrical/mechanical engineering or direct relevant experience; a masters degree in electrical or mechanical engineering is a strong plus. Minimum 12 to 15 years of experience in engineering or related technical BESS disciplines; experience in renewable energy is required. In-depth knowledge of power electronics including inverters and transformers is required. In-depth knowledge of control architectures related to BESS projects is required. Preferred Qualifications
In-depth knowledge of power systems design is preferred. Knowledge of US energy sector norms, standards and regulations is strongly desired. Knowledge of the energy sector in Mexico and/or Central America is a plus. Knowledge of BESS and Solar PV system design is preferred. Knowledge of PVSyst or similar PV and BESS system modeling tools is preferred. Proficiency in English (written and verbal) is required. Proficiency in Spanish (written and verbal) would be a plus. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) required. Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy are required. Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills are required. Excellent organizational skills are required. Ability to analyze and solve problems; ability to perform in a fast-paced environment; ability to handle multiple projects in parallel. Highly customer- and success-oriented; ability to work independently as well as in a team. This position may require periodic domestic travel as well as international travel to Canada, Latin America, and SMAs headquarters in Germany. We Offer
