Title Senior Manager, Advanced Renewable Energy
Basic Function The Engineering and Innovation (E&I) team provides technical insights and supports decision-making across all life cycle phases of renewable projects (development, construction, operations, and maintenance). The Innovation program demonstrates and deploys at-scale first-of-a-kind technologies. An Innovation Center near Denver, Colorado, enables field demonstrations of hardware, software, and business models, including solar technologies, energy storage, flexible compute loads, AI-based control strategies, and more.
The Senior Manager will lead advanced renewable energy projects that push the status quo, engaging across multiple business units and executives to drive strategic direction and business decisions. Near-term projects include development, demonstration, and deployment of an AI-based Intelligent Energy Management System (IEMS) and alternatives for seamless uninterruptible backup power at data centers.
Responsibilities
Lead requirements gathering, equipment design, and contracting for hardware to deploy at the Innovation Center (inverters, storage, compute loads).
Manage installation, commissioning, and operations of equipment deployed at the Innovation Center.
Develop and execute test plans at the Innovation Center.
Oversee and perform data analysis. Translate analytical results into actionable insights.
Assist deployment and initial operation of successful technologies into commercial plants.
Duties and Responsibilities
Ideate, identify, collect, and track new innovations through industry events, site visits, internal collaboration, networking, and self-guided research.
Evaluate new technologies (hardware/software), execution methods, internal processes, finance, and business model innovations; perform techno-economic and risk analysis to inform decisions.
Convene stakeholder meetings to brainstorm ideas, evaluate with experts, report on progress, and promote a culture of innovation.
Develop models and run simulations for techno-economic analysis and related applications.
Manage design, construction, and operations of technologies at the Innovation Center.
Provide day-to-day oversight, operations, and maintenance of the Innovation Center; coordinate with internal and external stakeholders; travel as needed.
Analyze demonstration data, derive insights, and present results to stakeholders.
Prepare and present to Innovation stakeholders, including SB Energy executives.
Assist with commercialization planning for promising technologies (plans, budgets, milestones) and present to the executive team for approval.
Assist deployment of innovations into large-scale commercial projects.
Promote SB Energy and Innovation efforts through whitepapers, conferences, and marketing materials.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Position requires up to 25% domestic travel, including to the Innovation Center near Denver, CO.
Job Qualifications
Minimum eight (8) years of professional experience in engineering or a technical role in renewable energy.
B.S. in Engineering from ABET-accredited university; Master’s or Doctorate a plus.
Experience implementing innovations on large-scale renewable energy projects and/or managing small-scale field demonstrations.
Broad experience across new solar technologies, power conversion equipment, energy storage, or AI/ML applications in renewable energy.
Strong engineering, design, and communication skills; able to work in a dynamic team and solve problems creatively.
Ability to quantify the value of new technologies and prioritize accordingly.
Expertise in techno-economic analysis, financial modeling, and energy production modeling.
Strong organizational and prioritization skills to manage multiple projects; detail-oriented; self-starter.
Comfort with ambiguity; takes ownership.
Strong communication skills to convey technical concepts to an executive audience and collaborate in a dynamic team.
Ability to contextualize technical modeling results and distill actionable takeaways for executives.
Location Denver, CO (preferred) or San Francisco Bay Area; also available in San Diego, CA; Denver, CO; Phoenix, AZ; Austin, TX; or remote option.
Compensation Base:
160000-180000
The pay range is a guideline. Offers are tailored based on skills, experience, location, and market benchmarks. Total compensation may include a discretionary annual bonus, long-term incentive plan, and a comprehensive health and wellness benefits package. Final details discussed in later hiring stages.
