Overview

Thermal Engineer role at Supermicro. We are seeking a highly skilled engineer to lead the design, construction, integration, and ongoing support of server rack burn-in lines with a focus on liquid cooling infrastructure, controls, and automation systems. This role plays a critical part in scaling rack testing facilities, ensuring operational reliability, automation optimization, and efficient cooling solutions. Responsibilities

Lead the end-to-end design and implementation of new burn-in line infrastructure for high-density server racks, including liquid cooling systems (CDUs, CDU loops, manifolds, quick disconnects). Define and document technical requirements for sensors, actuators, PLCs, SCADA/HMI systems, and related control hardware/software. Oversee contractor/vendor installation work, ensuring adherence to design specifications and timelines. Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and network teams to ensure seamless integration of burn-in systems. Program, test, and optimize PLC-based control systems for burn-in operations (e.g., temperature, flow rate, leak detection, interlocks). Develop or improve HMI/SCADA interfaces for real-time system monitoring, alarming, and performance visualization. Implement automated test routines and workflows to enhance throughput and ensure rack validation efficiency. Own the preventative and reactive maintenance strategy for liquid-cooled burn-in lines, including valves, flow meters, CDUs, pumps, and sensors. Troubleshoot system failures and coordinate repairs with internal and external teams. Conduct regular inspections and performance audits, escalating issues and recommending design improvements where needed. Maintain accurate as-built documentation, controls diagrams, network schematics, and maintenance logs. Ensure system designs and operations adhere to EH&S, ASHRAE, and company-specific data center standards. Support commissioning efforts by developing SOPs, training documentation, and test scripts. Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering (or equivalent experience). 5+ years in data center, HVAC, or industrial control systems. Hands-on experience with liquid cooling systems (CDUs, quick disconnects, fluid distribution systems). Strong knowledge of PLC programming (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley), HMI/SCADA, and building management systems. Familiar with burn-in and validation procedures for server rack deployment. Understanding of industrial communication protocols: Modbus, BACnet, OPC-UA, TCP/IP. Ability to read and produce P&ID, control loop, and wiring diagrams. Preferred

Experience in high-density server rack environments (e.g., AI/GPU workloads). Familiarity with leak detection systems, environmental monitoring, and data logging solutions. Project management experience related to controls or mechanical systems deployment. OSHA 30, PMP, or other industry certifications. Travel up to 20% to data center and manufacturing sites. Ability to work in mechanical rooms and raised floor environments. Occasional lifting up to 30 lbs, standing, and hands-on troubleshooting. Salary

$87,000 - $145,000 The salary offered will depend on location, level, education, training, specific skills, years of experience, and comparison to other employees in this role. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for bonus and equity programs. Location
