Overview
Classroom Counselor for James Baldwin Academy (San Leandro, CA) to support students in grades 5–12 with emotional and behavioral challenges. Provide individualized attention and direct instruction in core areas to help students progress on IEP goals within a standards-based curriculum. About James Baldwin Academy
James Baldwin Academy (JBA) is a small, WASC-accredited school serving students in grades 5–12 with unique mental health and learning needs. With four classrooms, we provide highly individualized academic and behavioral interventions and offer engaging extracurriculars such as gardening, skateboard club, and art club. Our program is built on Confidence, Compassion, and Community, and we pursue a humanizing and therapeutic learning environment with equity-driven education.

Responsibilities
Work collaboratively within a transdisciplinary team, including teachers, counselors, specialists, and program leadership
Build therapeutic relationships that help students engage and achieve personalized goals
Support academic instruction by assisting with individual and group activities as directed
Implement classroom modifications and accommodations based on student IEPs and other plans
Deliver direct behavioral intervention that reduces behaviors impeding school success and promotes positive behaviors for learning and community engagement
Complete required data collection and service documentation to measure effectiveness, inform team decisions, and engage in service billing
Communicate effectively with families and all others involved in the students’ daily life, including other Seneca programs or external agencies
Utilize crisis communication and de-escalation techniques as per Seneca's crisis response training
Intervene with students’ behavioral programs as needed in accordance with safety protocols
Qualifications
Education/Experience requirements:
Bachelor\'s degree OR
Associate degree and 1 year of applicable experience OR
High school diploma/GED and 2 years of applicable experience
Applicable experience can include working with youth or families, classroom support, mental health settings, crisis support, or related areas
At least 21 years of age
Reliable transportation to and from the school site and other meeting locations
Own vehicle and valid California Driver's License preferred
TB test clearance and fingerprinting clearance, and any other licensing or certification requirements
Schedule
School-based schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM–5:00 PM

Starting at $26.22–$28.72 per hour; actual salary dependent on experience
Salary increases each year; bilingual proficiency may provide additional compensation
