Job Summary: The Dray Carrier Buyer is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and managing relationships with drayage carriers to ensure cost-effective and timely transportation of goods. This role requires strong negotiation skills, knowledge of the transportation industry, and the ability to build and maintain strong carrier partnerships to support our logistics operations.

Key Responsibilities: Identify and onboard reliable drayage carriers to meet the company's transportation needs. Negotiate competitive rates and contract terms with carriers while ensuring service quality and compliance. Maintain and expand carrier relationships to ensure capacity and service reliability. Monitor carrier performance, including on-time delivery, safety standards, and compliance with regulatory requirements. Collaborate with internal teams (operations, dispatch, and customer service) to align carrier services with customer expectations. Analyze market trends and freight rates to optimize carrier selection and cost efficiency. Resolve issues related to carrier performance, pricing disputes, or service disruptions promptly. Maintain accurate records of carrier agreements, rates, and performance metrics. Stay informed on industry regulations, including FMCSA and DOT requirements, to ensure carrier compliance. Utilize transportation management systems (TMS) and other tools to track and manage carrier activities. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business, or a related field (preferred). 2+ years of experience in transportation, logistics, or carrier procurement, with a focus on drayage or trucking. Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills. Knowledge of drayage operations, intermodal transportation, and port logistics. Familiarity with transportation management systems (TMS) and industry software. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with carriers and internal teams. Ability to analyze data and make informed decisions to optimize costs and performance. Detail-oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, and other relevant regulations is a plus. Preferred Skills: Experience working with drayage carriers in the Chicago market or major port regions. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.) and logistics software.
