Overview
This position is with Children’s Home Society of California (CHS). The role reports to the CFO within the Financial Services Department and supports the management of CHS’s $204 million annual operating budget. The Director of Financial Planning and Analysis will collaborate with a team of professionals to ensure sound financial management and to implement CHS’s financial strategies.
Compensation & Benefits Base pay range: $165,000.00/yr - $180,000.00/yr. This range is provided by CHS. Your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience — talk with your recruiter to learn more.
Salary – $165,000 - $180,000 DOE

Location This position is based at CHS’s corporate headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. Some travel between Northern and Southern California and CHS offices will be required.
Position Summary Reporting to the CFO and serving as a vital member of CHS leadership, the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis will ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial information. The role will support the CFO in implementing CHS’s financial strategies, provide financial analysis to support program and general operations, decision-making, and long-term planning. The Director of Financial Planning and Analysis supports the management of CHS’s $204 million annual operating budget.
Duties & Responsibilities
Oversee the preparation and management of the annual budget, financial forecasts, cash flow reports, and year-end financial reports.
Prepare enrollment projections and multi-year forecasts to monitor contract income and expenses.
Review and manage the financial aspects of contracts and grants and ensure contract compliance. Oversee timely reporting, invoicing, and data collection.
Monitor cash flow and liquidity to ensure financial stability and provide recommendations to optimize cash management and investment strategies.
Prepare insightful internal reporting for management and support the evaluation of projects with rigorous analysis.
Support the President & CEO and CFO in the development and execution of the agency budget and financial priorities.
Prepare and present financial reports to Senior Management and stakeholders, and offer insight into financial trends, challenges, and opportunities.
Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Ensure compliance with laws, nonprofit financial standards, and regulations; maintain awareness of industry best practices and trends regarding nonprofit financial management.
Maintain accounting and cost policies and procedures to comply with GAAP, OMB, IRS, FTB, and all applicable regulations for financial reporting, tax filings, and compliance.
Support the Director of Financial Services and staff in managing all aspects of the Financial Services Department, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and tax reporting compliance.
Collaborate with the CFO in the preparation and coordination of the annual audit process and ensure compliance with contract requirements and regulations.
Work with the CFO to manage financial compliance reviews conducted by contractors and funders.
Develop productive working relationships with external auditors, vendors, and funders.
Implement recommendations from external auditors to improve internal controls.
Identify and report financial risks to the CFO and recommend mitigation strategies.
Provide on-site, high-level management support and leadership at CHS headquarters when needed.
Potential to propose a staffing strategy to meet needs; mentor, train, and evaluate department staff in collaboration with the Director of Financial Services.
Maintain all records in a high-quality manner within retention and destruction guidelines.
Background Profile

Minimum of 7+ years of senior-level financial experience; proven success leading nonprofit finance and operations.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or management; MBA and/or CPA preferred.
Strategic thinker with ability to translate financial data into actionable insights for staff, leadership, and the Board.
Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance (GAAP, FASB, IRS, FTB, OMB).
Strong analytical skills with advanced Excel; Power BI or similar software preferred.
Experience with financial system upgrades and process automation preferred.
Experience with financial software and systems, including accounting software, budgeting tools, and financial reporting systems (Microsoft Dynamics desirable).
Demonstrated experience with audit, contract/grants management, legal compliance, and regulatory oversight.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex financial information clearly; strong public speaking, relationship-building, and writing skills.
Exceptional leadership skills with experience managing a financial services team and providing mentoring and professional growth.
