Director, Service Learning and Impact in Community Engagement (SLICE)
CU Boulder encourages applications for a Director for Service Learning and Impact in Community Engagement (SLICE). This role provides strategic leadership and oversight to advance social change in service learning, community engagement, and social justice. The director will use a collaborative and social justice approach to bring vision, creativity, and gravitas to the role, championing the department mantra Learn, Serve, Reflect. The director will interpret divisional and campus strategic planning initiatives to lead tactical planning for the unit in coordination with the SLICE Advisory Board. While prioritizing the student experience, they will implement procedural and practical changes based on scholarship and proven application in service learning, civic engagement, and student involvement in higher education. The director will cultivate relationships with the broader community and the non-profit sector. The goals are to: (1) build a portfolio representing a broad variety of student service interests, (2) meet current community needs, and (3) help community members and students understand structural and sociopolitical conditions that contribute to inequity while enabling meaningful, cooperative engagement. The director will supervise the Assistant Director for Service Learning, Leadership, and Social Action and the Assistant Director for Community Engagement. SLICE is comprised of a staff of four student life professionals and over a dozen student coordinators. Reporting to the Acting Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Life, the director manages assessment and evaluation of staff and programming. What You Will Do Responsibilities
Provides leadership, supervision, and oversight to the SLICE staff, including strategic planning and advancing the SLICE mission, vision, and goals. Advises and works with the SLICE Advisory Board. Supervises the Assistant Directors for Service Learning, Leadership, and Social Action; and Community Engagement. Oversees hiring, training, and supervision of SLICE staff. Collaborates with staff to set outcomes and goals, manage performance, and support professional development. Mentors students, interns, and volunteers engaged in SLICE programming. Provides fiscal oversight for a department budget totaling over 800k; coordinates budget reports and summaries for governance bodies. Advises on staff hiring and supervision practices for department offerings (e.g., Sko Serve, CU in the Community, volunteer programs, marketing, and events). Supports SLICE staff in expenditure tracking and program efficiency. Develops innovative volunteer programming through campus and community partnerships; applies models to assess and adapt programming to student needs. Oversees the acquisition and implementation of volunteer management software. Engages in strategic visioning and planning and collaborates with Student Life Technology Solutions for integration. Leadership, Student Engagement, and Partnerships
Serve as an advisor to the SLICE Board and collaborate with campus governance structures on budget requests and program needs. Lead service-learning initiatives, civic engagement, and volunteer management training for students, staff, faculty, and community partners. Lead fundraising efforts in partnership with CU advancement, alumni, and national partners. Consult campus partners on standard processes impacting volunteer labor at CU Boulder. Reporting and Compliance
Manage dual reporting structures to Student Life and CU Student Government. Identify and navigate differences in stakeholder priorities and report to both areas regularly. Collaborate with Risk Management, Emergency Management, and Policy & Compliance to assess risk in volunteer programs. Develop SLICE policies and procedures and an ongoing assessment/communication plan aligned with the strategic vision of Student Life. Review campus and state policies to adapt SLICE programs accordingly. Campus and Community Relations
Develop a strategic outreach plan to raise awareness of SLICE programs among campus and community partners. Represent SLICE in community, state, and national contexts, communicating SLICE’s mission and collaborating with campus departments, boards, committees, and task forces. Coordinate with external agencies to manage volunteer and donation efforts. Build partnerships across CU and broader communities to streamline services and communications with faculty, staff, and students. Support communities by teaching volunteers about cultural competency, navigation, and adapting programs (e.g., CU in the Community, SKO Serve, volunteer placement). Maintain strong relationships with campus partners to support service and experiential learning within an advocacy framework. Other Duties
Stay current with developments in Student Affairs and related fields; attend conferences and contribute to shared development. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor. What You Should Know
This is a full-time leadership position with standard business hours of 8-5, with some nights and weekends expected. Summer hours align with university requirements. What We Can Offer

Master’s degree in sociology, higher education, nonprofit administration, or a closely related field; appropriate experience may substitute for the degree. 4+ years in program development and management related to service learning or civic engagement in a higher education setting. Experience supervising professional staff. Budget and fiscal management experience. What You Will Need
Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and groups. Strong interpersonal skills with staff, students, faculty, parents, community partners, and administration. Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Responsiveness to internal and external partners. Strong administrative and organizational skills. Knowledge of student development concepts and how to apply them to programs. Understanding of assessment and evaluation. Commitment to social justice and civic engagement.
