WSP is excited to announce an open position for
Head of Electrical Engineering, Renewables
within the national Onshore Renewables Engineering Team. This leadership role is ideally based at
Boulder, CO
or
Houston, TX
and involves client engagement, electrical balance of plant (BOP) subject matter expertise, and leading teams through due diligence, development, design, and construction phases of utility and commercial-scale solar, wind, and BESS projects across the US (primarily in the private sector).
The successful candidate will drive client success, address current and future challenges with risk-aware documentation and recommendations, and contribute to the growth of WSP’s Energy engineering footprint in the US. This role requires delivering high-quality design and construction leadership that meets or exceeds industry standards for safety and functionality.
Your Impact
Prepare, oversee, and review MV electrical collection designs and studies for solar and wind generating facilities, conforming to client specifications, national electrical codes, and best industry practices.
Coordinate, review and approve electrical infrastructure design plans for mid-level and complex projects, ensuring data integrity and compliance with codes, ordinances, and regulations.
Apply advanced electrical engineering techniques to identify improvements across project phases, including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
Perform professional electrical engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of site conditions, facilities, layout, grounding design, and protective measures to ensure conformance with regulations.
Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare safety and phasing plans; and update layout plans coordinating with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
Oversee future-ready technologies, monitoring devices, and design strategies to ensure safety and functionality for end-users and infrastructure.
Manage design and construction of electrical infrastructure projects from inception to completion, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, site development, grading, drainage, equipment layout, phasing, and safety plans.
Lead large electrical engineering projects, manage budgets, track hours and expenses, supervise subcontractors and staff, and ensure quality and on-time delivery.
Assist with engineering reviews of permit applications, design plans, and contracts, ensuring compliance with regulations and sound engineering practice.
Engage with public or private entities to discuss electrical/engineering/construction challenges and programs.
Present technical findings and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address electrical and construction issues.
Maintain high quality and responsiveness to client requirements in alignment with WSP standards.
Develop client base for high-level electrical engineering services and identify additional business development opportunities.
Mentor staff and remain current in latest electrical engineering techniques and practices.
Collaborate with professionals from multiple disciplines on projects and proposals, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
12+ years of relevant post-education experience as an electrical engineer delivering design for renewables, ideally at utility, industrial, or commercial scale.
Professional Electrical Engineer license required (multi-state preferred).
Proficiency with electrical engineering principles, design/build processes, permitting, and related issues.
Experience with infrastructure design including solar photovoltaic facilities.
Experience planning, designing, and managing programs/construction with collaboration across civil, P&C, SCADA, and telecom disciplines.
Experience mentoring staff and developing professionals.
Strong knowledge of electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping.
Ability to perform technical computations, interpret plans/specifications, and apply regulations.
Experience with inspections and investigations of construction and design of facilities or structures.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
Self-leadership and ability to guide mid-level to senior team members with QA/QC adherence.
Proficiency with technical writing, office software, design software (e.g., PVsyst, PVcase, ETAP, AutoCAD Electrical).
Experience delivering complex technical deliverables and plans.
Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities for data-driven decisions.
Ability to coordinate and direct subcontractors to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP health and safety policies.
Flexibility to accommodate varying schedules and adapt to change; occasional travel may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Engineering.
Substation and HV experience.

Compensation Expected Salary (all locations): $139,800 - $249,150
Expected Salary (Colorado only): $130,100 - $226,100
