This Opportunity Head of Electrical Engineering, Renewables
within the national Onshore Renewables Engineering Team. Based at either the Boulder, CO or Houston, TX office, this leadership role drives client success and supports the Energy Transition in the US market. The role sits within WSP USA’s Energy team, a leading firm in power delivery, power generation, and project management with a focus on renewables. WSP is a large, multidisciplinary professional services firm that delivers energy transition services to clients nationwide. This position offers the chance to contribute to the growth of WSP’s Energy engineering footprint in the US, with opportunities to collaborate across a global network and work on diverse projects with colleagues from around the world. The leader will provide client engagement, electrical balance of plant (BOP) subject matter expertise, and team leadership throughout due diligence, development, design, and construction phases of utility and commercial-scale solar, wind, and BESS projects nationwide, primarily in the private sector. Responsibilities include BOP electrical project and task delivery, overseeing delivery teams, and contributing to proposal and business development activities such as participating in key conferences and client meetings. The role also requires providing guidance to PMs and managers on risk, innovation, and future-ready opportunities, and ensuring that deliverables meet industry design, safety, and functionality standards. Key accountability includes leading larger-scale electrical engineering projects, managing budgets, tracking hours and expenses, supervising subcontractors and contract work, and ensuring quality and compliance with applicable codes and regulations. Your Impact Prepare, oversee, and review MV electrical collection designs and studies for solar and wind facilities, conforming to client specifications, national electrical codes, and best industry practices. Coordinate, review and approve electrical infrastructure design plans for mid-level and complex projects, ensuring data integrity and compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations. Apply high-level electrical engineering techniques to identify improvements across project phases, including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation. Perform professional electrical engineering work and conduct complex investigations and inspections of site conditions, BESS general arrangement, grounding design, and lightning protection to ensure conformance with rules and permits. Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans; update infrastructure layout plans coordinating with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients. Oversee the development and implementation of future-ready technologies, monitoring devices, cabling, conduit and trenching design strategies, and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality for end-users, systems, and infrastructure. Oversee from project inception to completion the design and construction of electrical infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, site development, utilities, and safety plans. Lead large electrical engineering projects, managing budgets, tracking hours and expenses, and supervising subcontractors, contract work, and staff. Assist with engineering review of permit applications, design plans and specifications, standby plans and engineering contracts, and periodic construction inspections to ensure compliance with regulations and sound engineering practice. Meet with public or private entities to discuss electrical/engineering/construction challenges and programs. Ensure technical reports and presentations explain research, findings, and recommendations to address electrical, design, or construction issues or opportunities. Maintain a high level of client responsiveness in alignment with Pickett’s standards. Develop a client base for high-level electrical engineering services, including identifying additional business development opportunities. Mentor staff to support growth and professional development. Remain current in the latest electrical engineering techniques and practices. Collaborate with professionals across disciplines on funded improvement and development projects, including proposal and business development opportunities. Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and policies. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Who You Are Required Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. 12+ years of relevant post-education experience as an electrical engineer delivering design for renewables, ideally at utility, industrial, or commercial scale. Professional Electrical Engineer license required (multi-state preferred). Strong proficiency with electrical engineering principles, practices, design/build, permitting, and project work-related issues. Strong proficiency with infrastructure design, including solar photovoltaic facilities. Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and program/construction management; including collaboration with civil, P&C, SCADA, and telecom disciplines. Experience mentoring staff to support growth and professional development. Knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping. Ability to perform technical computations and interpret plans and specifications against regulations. Experience planning and conducting inspections and investigations of construction and design of facilities or structures. Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences. Strong self-leadership and ability to interact with clients, regulators, PMs, and staff at all levels. Ability to work independently and provide guidance to mid-level to senior team members with QA/QC adherence. Proficiency with technical writing, and design software (e.g., PVsyst, PVcase, ETAP, AutoCAD electrical). Experience providing critical review for complex documents and technical deliverables. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to solutions. Proven ability to coordinate and direct subcontractors and others to complete tasks safely and efficiently. Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP health and safety policies. Flexibility to work varying schedules and adapt to change; occasional travel may be required. Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in Engineering. Substation and HV experience.
