Why does the job exist?
This position provides essential paralegal and legal assistant support to the New Mexico Environment Department's Office of General Counsel, ensuring the office can effectively manage its caseload and deliver timely, accurate legal services. By analyzing and organizing case information, researching relevant laws and decisions, and preparing legal documents and reports, the role strengthens the Department's ability to make informed decisions and uphold compliance with environmental regulations.
The paralegal serves as a key partner to attorneys by streamlining legal processes, maintaining accessible case records, and facilitating communication with the public, businesses, and other organizations. This support allows attorneys to focus on strategic legal work while ensuring that all matters are thoroughly prepared and documented, contributing to the Department's mission of protecting New Mexico's environment and communities.
How does it get done?
- Assist attorneys in identifying and documenting legal issues, and support the development of reporting procedures - Draft, review, and prepare legal documents for filing with the New Mexico Environment Department Hearing Office or state courts - Maintain and organize case files, correspondence, and records to ensure accuracy and accessibility - File and record legal documents, including notarization when required - Conduct record searches and gather information to support case preparation and legal decision-making - Coordinate legal support activities to facilitate effective case management and communication
Who are the customers?
- New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment - Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations - Internal staff
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following: - Drafting and preparing legal correspondence - Conducting legal research and maintaining a case management/tracking system - Applying strong writing skills - Multitasking under tight deadlines
Minimum Qualification
Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies and two (2) years of work experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research, and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course certification.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
