Job Description Job Title: Cath Lab/Special Procedures Tech Profession: Cath Lab/Special Procedures Tech Specialty: Cardiac Cath Department Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 9 hour days Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience as a Cath Lab Tech License: IEMA Certification or willingness to obtain Certifications: BLS - American Heart; ARRT Certification
Must-Have: - Knowledge of principles and procedures of diagnostic radiology as acquired through completion of two years post high school training at an approved School of Radiologic Technology with six months related training in radiologic special procedures. - Registered with the ARRT.
Description: Performs cine, digital subtraction angiography, and other specialized radiologic procedures under sterile techniques to assist physicians in diagnosing and treating patients. Prepares examination areas, positions patients for procedures, and operates complex radiology equipment according to established techniques and routines. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the ages of the patients served while following established guidelines for radiation safety. Operates physiologic monitors to record the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems' functions during diagnostic and interventional cardiac and vascular procedures. Functions as a scrub tech, obtaining and arranging sterile setups of the instrument table with supplies required for specific procedures. Passes catheters and other sterile instruments to the physician and anticipates their needs during procedures while ensuring cleanliness of all exposed surfaces. Prepares patients for procedures by positioning them, applying sterile techniques to catheter insertion sites, and explaining procedures to allay apprehensions and elicit cooperation. Reviews patient charts prior to procedures to verify all required laboratory work is completed and maintains necessary patient records. Operates complex radiology equipment such as special x-ray tubes, cine angiographic equipment, and digital subtraction devices. Calculates and selects proper technical factors on radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment based on patient factors. Ensures proper injection programs to obtain necessary exposures for diagnostic procedures. Transfers images to the cardiac picture archival system and ensures all images are properly archived. Ensures all equipment is in proper working order by performing minor repairs or notifying appropriate personnel of malfunctions. Observes and monitors patients' cardiovascular and pulmonary systems during catheterization procedures and alerts the physician to changes outside normal ranges. Calculates hemodynamic data for presentation to the physician for interpretation. Attends mandatory meetings and work-related educational programs. Develops and maintains positive working relationships with department personnel and outside agencies. Assists in preparing rooms between patients by tearing down equipment, removing waste, disposing of contaminated materials, and replenishing supplies. Completes monthly on-call requirements which include weekends and holidays. Attends required educational programs to support continuous quality improvement efforts designed to increase patient outcomes and satisfaction. Successfully completes the special procedures technologist competency.
