The Director of Operations is responsible for overseeing and optimizing the day-to-day administrative, financial, and operational functions of the law firm. The role ensures support functions run smoothly, supports strategic goals, enhances efficiency, and enables attorneys to focus on legal practice. The ideal candidate will bring experience in law firm administration, financial management, HR, IT systems, and facilities operations. Responsibilities
Operations Management: Lead and manage daily administrative operations of the firm; develop and implement firm-wide policies, procedures, and workflows; oversee practice support functions including legal assistants, paralegals, and administrative staff. Finance & Budgeting: Partner with accounting to prepare and manage budgets, forecasts, and financial reports; monitor and control expenses and firm-wide cost-saving initiatives. Human Resources: Oversee HR functions including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance reviews, and professional development; coordinate with HR regarding insurance and benefits policies and renewals; ensure compliance with employment laws and firm policies. Technology & Systems: Coordinate with IT staff and vendors to ensure availability and security of systems; oversee technology upgrades and implementation of new tools. Compliance & Risk Management: Oversee insurance policies, conflict-check systems, and internal controls; ensure firm compliance with legal, regulatory, and ethical obligations. Strategic Planning & Development: Work with firm leadership to develop and execute strategic plans; identify operational inefficiencies and implement improvements; support attorney and timekeeper management with resource planning and performance metrics. Facilities & Vendor Management: Manage office leases, space planning, facility maintenance, and oversee vendor contracts. Bachelor’s degree required; MBA, JD, or other advanced degree preferred. 7+ years of operations or legal administration experience, preferably in a law firm or professional services environment. Strong knowledge of law firm finance, HR, and compliance. Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook). Banner Witcoff offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including paid time off, medical/dental/vision insurance, 401(k), business-casual attire, and a friendly office environment. The salary range for this role is between $175,000 and $200,000 and is exempt. The range is applicable for work performed in Washington, D.C. An employee’s pay within the range will be based on qualifications, experience, skills, location, and business needs. This position is eligible for an annual merit increase and bonus pay.
