Fort Wayne Housing Authority (FWHA)
Position Summary:
The Accountant plays a key role in supporting the financial operations of the Fort Wayne Housing Authority. This position is responsible for maintaining the general ledger, preparing financial reports, monitoring budgets, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations. The Accountant also contributes to the development and improvement of automated accounting systems and processes. All work supports FWHA’s mission, strategic objectives, and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform general accounting functions, including budgeting, financial monitoring, and monthly reporting in collaboration with FWHA staff.
Maintain efficient management control and reporting systems to accurately reflect program costs and ensure compliance with HUD guidelines.
Prepare financial documentation for audits, serve as liaison to auditors, and monitor audit schedules to ensure timely and accurate completion.
Manage and reconcile the general ledger and sub-ledgers, prepare journal entries, and assist with year-end close processes.
Maintain detailed records and documentation to support general ledger activities and ensure proper archiving of historical files.
Oversee daily and monthly processes in the Yardi Tenant Accounting module; coordinate training for accounting staff on Yardi systems.
Process tenant financial transactions, including bad debt payments, write-offs, security deposit refunds, and account closeouts.
Serve as the primary contact for Property Managers on tenant accounting matters for public housing and tax credit properties.
Provide oversight of cash management, cash flow, investments, and timely completion of bank reconciliations.
Assist with year-end financial reporting to HUD and other agencies; prepare necessary reports and support annual audits.
Conduct special financial analysis and reporting as requested.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience:
Associate’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field. Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in public sector accounting with knowledge of financial control systems.
A combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
Valid driver’s license and insurability under FWHA’s insurance plan required.
Commitment to continuing education through housing industry or related courses.
Technical Skills:
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with the ability to create, analyze, and interpret financial reports.
Ability to quickly learn and utilize other accounting software systems, such as Yardi.
