Staff Accountant (Accountant I) – State of Colorado
The Financial Services team within the Office of the Attorney General is seeking a dedicated Accountant to join a collaborative team that supports the Department of Law. This position works on a variety of unique accounting tasks with primary focus on accounts payable and related financial operations.
Overview
This Financial Services unit provides fiscal management and support for all units within the Department of Law, ensuring purchases of goods and services comply with State statutes, fiscal rules, and DOL policies. The unit handles all departmental financial transactions (accounts payable and receivable, encumbrances, budget), financial reporting, and supports annual audits. The primary accountant for accounts payable for the Department of Law will manage financial transactions with suppliers and vendors, issue disbursements, and ensure compliance with professional accounting standards and state policies.
Responsibilities
- Process accounts payable and receivable, legal services billing, litigation expense tracking and reporting, payroll and benefits administration, grant accounting and reporting, and monitoring budget to actual.
- Prepare financial exhibits and interpret and implement new accounting standards; provide support for annual audits.
- Work under a delegation from the Office of the State Controller for all financial operations.
- Create job aids related to accounting tasks and manage workflow of accounting document submissions, ensuring compliance with state and departmental rules.
Minimum Qualifications
- Four (4) years of professional accounting or governmental auditing experience.
- OR a combination of related education (27 semester hours in accounting or auditing) and/or professional accounting or governmental auditing experience equal to four (4) years.
- Current, valid licensure as a CPA by the Colorado Board of Accountancy may substitute for four (4) years of education.
Note: Candidates qualifying with education must provide transcripts. Foreign degrees require a translation/evaluation from an accredited agency to be credited.
Required Competencies
- Proficiency with MS Office applications including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to work with a wide variety of stakeholders.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional accounting experience beyond the minimum two years.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with CORE (Colorado Operations Resource Engine).
- Experience interpreting local, state, or federal laws and fiscal rules.
- Strong customer service skills and ability to interact with internal and external customers.
- State government accounting experience.
Conditions of Employment

- Flexible work arrangement: 3 days in office and 2 days from home. May change based on business needs.
